I've noticed that my local NBC (Raleigh - 17) is pixelating on my HR20-700, even though I think the signal strength is fine and the picture from the same channel on my off-air antenna looks great. Just pixelates enough that the background is moving.

I have had D* at my home since 2006 (a D* customer since 2001). I have a HR20-700 in my main viewing area, connected to my 10-year-old Sony 51" HD RPTV (1080i) [CRT w/component video/no HDMI]. I also have a 10 year old Tivo DSR6000R upstairs connected to a 20" Sony tube. Last night I signed up for the $8/mo protection plan in case I need to use it (I know it takes 30 days to be active).

Should I wait 30 days for the protection plan to kick in before reporting the issue? Do I actually need the protection plan for D* to send me new equipment?

Almost certainly not an equipment problem, there have been several reports of this problem with the NBC station in Raleigh Durham. Since you don't see the issue on OTA, that suggests the problem is somewhere in the local DirecTV Local Receive Facility or in the uplink.

If you actually have faulty equipment, you will get it replaced free of charge whether you have the protection plan or not. You pay the $30 for shipping and this is waived if you have the protection plan.

Remember the HR20 is the only one of the DirecTV DVRs that has an OTA tuner. If you get it replaced by a different model, you would need the AM21 off-air tuner to get OTA capability.

I have seen people on other sites complain about NBC 's picture problem and not just from Directv, but Dish and Cable subs as well.
