D-VHS as an alternative to BD???

1943 Views 38 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  xradman
I think like most people on this board, I am one of the best supporters of the movie industries. I own over 1300 DVDs, 3 HDTV sets (projector, RPTV, and LCD), over 10 DVD players, 3 HD-DVR (FIOS), and now Toshiba HD-XA1. I don't like the format war, but I chose HD-DVD to win in the end (correctly or wrongly). But in the meanwhile, what am I going to do with BD only movies? I don't want to buy a BD player or discs that I think will be obsolete in the end. I am thinking of getting a D-VHS and making HD recording from my FIOS HD-DVR for movies on HD channels (movies that are BD only or not yet available on HD-DVD, not to mention Star Wars on Cinemax). I think this will hold me over until the format war is over. I would much rather buy the movies but I refuse to buy new releases in anything other than HD anymore. I can't believe that I have to go back to taping movies on VHS tapes, but this is what the movie studios and their paranoia about piracy has done.

It will be a cold day in hell before I ever go back to a linear, tape based format. I still have a couple of Terabytes of HD recordings from 2001 to 2004 when I was recording HD with a PC and a couple of HiPix cards. I don't even want to go back to that, let alone a tape based format.

If there's one thing that is going to be obsolete, it is D-VHS.

Keep one thing in mind. Pretty much all the content offered up on premium channels like Cinemax and HBO ... even INHD ... is flagged to only allow ONE DUPLICATION. If you record anything from those channels on your hard drive in your DVR, it can not then be moved over to your DVHS recorder. The DVHS machine will give you an error that the content is copy protected. In the same sense, if you make a DVHS copy directly through firewire, you can't then move that copy over to your DVR hard drive.

With my Comcast box, all content except that from broadcast stations is so flagged. For that reason, I always go directly from the Comcast STB to the JVC DVHS. As long as you know that you're limited to one dupe cycle, it all works just fine.

I love being able to record and keep HD content on my DVHS machine.

I wouldn't say D-VHS is obsolete. D-theater may be obsolete, but until someone smartens up and allows one to record protected HD content to removable disc or to external hard drive, it's the only solution. Is there any other alternative to permanantly record premium HD content? One serious limitation to the FIOS HD-DVR is that you can only keep 5 or 6 HD movies before you run out of space. I suppose a better solution would be if FIOS enabled SATA or USB connectors, so that you can attach a larger external hard drive, but there is no such solution forecast in the near future. There are so many HD movies on these channels that will probably take years before they are available on any pre-recorded HD format.
With the news coming out of the Tokyo trade shows lately saying that the CE crowd there have no inclination to bring recordable BD or HD-DVD settops stateside for the foreseeable future, you're not left w/ a lot of options. Especially none as affordable as D-VHS (which holds its own when compared to HDDs, actually). And none if you want removeable media of its capacity. I, for one, am glad I purchased a deck and the D-Theater titles I own look fantastic. Plus, I can pop in my recordings of last years world series and relive the fever dream of my glorious White Sox victory...that its on tape is only a minor annoyance. I like the functionality.

I've already stated my plan: I'll buy into HD-DVD / Blu-ray as cheaply as possible in it's player-only state...i.e. a console solution. I have LOTS of other HD material to take in via my D-Theater and Dish Platinum packs. I won't be buying a lot of first generation discs...I'll use NetFlix for all it's worth. In a year or two, when the dust has settled, I'll get a dedicated HD disc player/recorder set-top. Who knows, maybe it'll be a combo, or maybe the format war will have tilted to one side in the mainstream by then (the only meaningful tilt, btw). I'm going to try to play it smart until then...

I sold all my D-Theater titles. Most of them were FOX and it appears FOX has plans to release them in BD format anyways.

I plan on buying a PS3 for games anyways, BD is the bonus. I still have my library of prerecorded DVHS tapes to watch. Blank Fuji ST-120 tapes are only $3.50. It's going to be a looooong time before blank BD+RWs are that price.

It seems with all the equipment you have, investing $500 in the low-end PS3 isn't a lot of money, plus you get the videogame too, so you really don't have to worry much about obsolescence.
Absolutely. Apart from the odd title for my kids I have given up purchasing SD DVDs.

I watched the 2 X-man movies on D-Theater the other day and the quality was outstanding, pretty darn close in every respect to the quality that I expect from my HD DVDs.

Well X-Men 3 came out this week and if it had been in HD DVD, it would have been a no-brainer to add to my collection. As it is, I'm passing and am not even going to rent it. I know it will be on HBO or Cinemax soon enough in HDTV with 5.1 DD, albeit reframed to a 1.78 aspect ration. So I'll record it then and add it to my collection of around 200 High definition movies on D-VHS.

Yes eventually HD DVD or BluRay recorders will be available and the blank medium will come down to about $5 but that is a long way off in the future. In the meantime, my JVC will keep me going.
D-Theater is still picture quality king with HD-DVD, no one is better than the other

thats the way I see it on my system, YMMV ;)

you can get a BR burner for 500$ now and black media for 12$ per 25gb, not too bad, considering lots of 25GB discs would hold 2 recorded HD movies if you removed null packets

Now that I'm back Stateside, I've just bought a very nifty gadget that I never knew existed, it sits inside the HD Sat receiver and connects your PC by USB 2.0

I can now capture the Mpeg2 and Mpeg4 HD streams to my PC, then archive it to DVHS and HD DVDs (I'm waiting to get one of the new HD DVD burners.

I can then play the recordings back through my PC or through my Toshiba A1 (soon to be XA2)

XRADMAN, is this the kind of scenario you meant?

Don't mean to stray too far OT, but can you guys elaborate on this R5...how does it compare to the 16:9 solutions, etc?
it destroys 169time, which is a total piece of ****, the R5000 works 100% perfect, the 169time crap works 0% perfect, I have had both

do not waste your time with the POS 169time stuff ;)

That's exactly what I want. It's too bad that it's not compatible with the FIOS QIP6416 HD-DVR, otherwise, I would pick one up in an instant.

I have a ViP 622 for my regular viewing (it feeds two rooms with their own remotes and tuners) and I use the ViP 211 for the scheduling of the Computer - it sits in my rack room. So I really view use of the R5xxx as separate from my regular viewing box. Just a thought.
I have a very large collection of 1080i material. All to DVHS.

Movies, The Masters, Superbowls, Tennis, Grammy's.....

DVHS is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have three machines all in working order. Never gonna go out of style.

I wonder when the extremely rare HD broadcast of the Sunday morning round at Augusta National, bathed in early morning golden sunlight, will be released on HDDVD or Blu-Ray??

Okay I'll answer....never. How about my custom DVHS HD tape of musical performances from Letterman and Leno??? Oh yeah...to never be seen again......

DVHS is the best thing to EVER happen to HD.

Everything recorded to the hard drive of my Moto 6412 can be firewire archived out to my DVHS units.

HBOHD, STARZHD...everything.
