I am looking for a new D* receiver, I would like to know if there one that passes both 480i and 1080i over the component output.

A few receivers let you switch the output mode that your receiver sends to the display. I know my Pany allows me to determine was signal I send from 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i. I'm not sure if all receivers do this, so you might just have to do some research on the receivers that you have in mind.

Does the Panny send the 480i out over component outs or just via svideo or composite?

480i is available for both component and s-video on the panasonic TU-HDS20. But it's not a good choice if you like to guide-surf.

I have the Zenith HDV420, and it only sends 480i through composite or S-video.

The Hughes E86 upconverts 480i to 1080i on the component connection. 480i is only available on the composite and s-video connections. I don't like the way SD looks upconverted, so I have my E86 hooked to the tv with both component and s-video cables. I watch SD in 480i via the s-video connection and HD via the component connection.
