Da-lite High Power Cosmopolitan Electrol - Strong Odor

1674 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  airscapes
Just got my Da-lite High Power Cosmopolitan Electrol that replaces an older model C with CSR. Everything about the screen is great except for the strong odor. Almost smells caustic. I have the home well ventilated and hopefully this will fade away in a few days. Anyone else experienced this? I have had a couple of Da-lite screen earlier, and never noticed this, but this by far is way too potent to go unnoticed. Da-lite, what have you changed in the chemical composition? Please let us know what is causing this. I like the new car smell but the new screen smell "Absolutely not".

I would guess this is the 2.4 High Power fabric? Stinks like a cheap vinyl window shade?? I noticed that when I had both the 2.4 and 2.8 screens at the same time. No idea how long it takes to finish off-gassing.. the old 2.8 fabric was made differently and did not smell.

Yes. It is the 2.4. Horrible. Hope it is not toxic.
I wonder what's going on with the smell on the 2.4?

I just received my Cinema Contour a few weeks ago with the 2.8 and it really doesn't have a noticable smell. Nor my older Model C with the 2.8 HP.
2.4 is a completely different fabric manufactured with different material. The backing on the 2.4 is thinner and softer. To make PVC soft chemical additives are added that can off gas and produce odor that is unpleasant The surface of the 2.4 appears to be sprayed on, so the white emulsifier that hold the beads may be contributing to the odor as well..

For more info on how vinyl is made, do a google on Vinyl or Vinyl smell..
Will the smell eventually go away?
I would call Dalite. I was sent a 2.4 last year in place of the 2.8. This was the first anyone had seen the 2.4, they (Dalite Customer Service and website) didnt' even know they had a new 2.4. It has been on the market for some time now, so maybe someone here that has had the 2.4 for a while can comment.
