Which screen would be better for use with a Sanyo PVL-60,

the Stewart Greyhawk or the Da-lite Cinema Contour with the High Contrast Da-Mat finish. Would the gain of .8 of the Da-lite versus the .95 of the Grayhawk be a big concern?

Also, Da-Lite state the viewing angle of the Da-Mat is only 40 degrees where the Greyhawk is 160. All help would be appreciated.

I can hear the can of worms opening now! You will probably get a diversity of replies to this topic. However. The best thing is to CHOOSE for yourself. Since imagery is quite subjective to an individuals taste, only you will be able to decide which IS best for your set-up.

You can email both STEWART and DA-LITE for samples of each screen material they manufacture. This is what I ended up doing, and one by one narrowed the selections down to two out of about fifteen samples. I narrowed my selections to the STEWART GreyHawk and DA-LITE'S High Contrast Da-Mat.

Then after about a week or two of comparisons I picked the DA-LITE HC Da-Mat Tensioned Electrol-Cosmopolitan. I personally thought it enhanced the contrast better than the GreyHawk. The price was much more affordable for me than the Stewart, however the Stewart material was a bit heavy dutier in thickness than the Da-Lite...but this really was not an issue for me, as I was more concerned with the projected image. I use the screen with the Sony 10HT (600/1000 lumens) and am 100% satisfied with my selection. Best thing is...I read everyones reviews and opinions...then checked out the samples myself...and then made an informed decision. I have no "buyers remorse" wondering "What If" I had bought another screen, since I checked them all out first.

Below is a good guideline in reviewing screen samples.


HELPFUL HINTS FOR EVALUATING SCREEN SAMPLES


Tape screen sample(s) to a flat vertical surface, such as a wall. Ordinary masking tape works well. Screen samples should be perfectly flat with no wrinkles.


It is much more efficient to study and evaluate still images rather than chasing an image in motion. From a video source, select an appropriate image and freeze the frame. Be sure to select a variety of material, such as a bright daytime image with deep shadows. Also, project images with dark screens, such as a night shot, to evaluate shadow detailing and black levels.


Evaluate the image quality from an appropriate viewing distance. Both the projector and screen will not look true at very close viewing.


Evaluate the screen performance from different seats and viewing angles. Try the seat which is the least perpendicular to the screen's centerline.


Introduce ambient light into the room. Try to duplicate actual conditions that you wish to view your system.


Position your projector in the same vertical orientation that will be permanently used. Some screens are gain sensitive to a floor or ceiling mount projector.


Try out these steps with your samples. It may help you in your decision. As Darren said read old posts, study your options, and make an educated decision.

FASTLS: Cindy's post is an excellent example of how to properly distinguish between samples! I must say that STEWARTS samples were nicely arranged 8x10 sheets (I think) and Da-Lites were quite abit smaller in comparison.
