FOR LT 15O NEC I am ordering a screen 45" X 80".

Question is which surface will be the best?


DAMAT OR HIGH CONTRAST


I will be watching mostly DVDs & satellite.

Well Da-lite explained that the high contrast works best if you have no direct light near the screen. The Da-mat works better when you have more ambient light. I'd say that the high contrast would likely give you better blacks and richer colors. I'd buy it. You have enough brightness to benefit from it.

I agree, high contrast screen are good with high out put lummens. I have a da-mat hc dalite witch a use with a Mitsubishi X400 with 3000 lummens, but when I used with a Panasonic with 1100 lummens I felt I was wathing movies from a shadow. Rick

If you get a high gain screen (1.5-2.8), which you should consider, many of them won't allow ceiling mounting of the projector because how the light is reflected back.

I have a VW-10HT and use it with cinema black off. Both PJ and audience are about 12 feet from the projected image. Total control of light in HT.


I watch DVDs only and used to do so on a blank wall. I've recently got a Da-Lite HC Da Mat and am very happy 'bout the improvements in contrast and colour saturation. There's no need to bump up contrast or brightness of PJ.

Your screen size is not too large, my calculations based on your 25 square foot screen is that you will get around 32 ft-lamberts (800 lumens/25 square ft). The HC Da-Mat is probably the better choice for you. Even with it's 0.8 gain you will still get quite good brightness off the screen (~25 ft-lamberts).


I wouldn't recommend a high gain screen, you have quite a bit of brightness already and high gain screens inevitably suffer from some hotspotting (whether it is enough to be noticed is another question). Unless you are going to be projecting with significant ambient light, the HC Da-Mat will serve you better than one of their high gain screens. Neither the Da-Mat or HC Da-Mat will perform as well as a gain screen with direct ambient light.

This question is going to sound silly but ambient light only comes into play during the day, right? At night, I wouldn't have to worry about it. Thanks!

Ambient light can also come from street lights or lights you have in the room. Anyways, if you can make you theatre reasonably dark you shouldn't have any problems with a lower gain screen. Unless you want a brighter image, go with the lower gain grey screen.

Curious to hear if measured lumens comes closer to 500 after(adjustments)and then half life of lamp is arrived at in 1-1 1/2 yrs with further drop in brightness affecting screen choice.(see Mr.Wiggles posts.)
