My replay TV is connected directly to a 10/100/1000 switch, same switch as my PC. Yet my transfer rate is ~ 600Kb/sec ? I have seen others post rates like 1.2 and 1.4Mb / sec ? Are these higher rates only achieved with the DVR "off" ?

I wouldn't think that downloading a stream at 600Kb would be so taxing to the PVR but during a download menus are virually completely unresponsive ? (10-30 second delay on processing commands).

Would upgrading to a 7200rpm drive (with appropriate cooling of course ! ) help to resolve this ? Is my speed normal for a box that is "on" ?

Yes, off and not recording anything.

Normal.

As the limitation is the CPU not the HD, a 7200rpm drive will not significantly improve matters. Also, you don't need any additional cooling for a 7200rpm drive in a 5xxx as it includes a fan.

The speeds you are seeing are normal for a box that is turned on and recording.

Ok followup (thanks for the rapid responce !!)

If the DVR is "off" and it hits the time of a scheduled recording will it turn itself back on ? I.e. is it safe to have DVA turn the DVR off everynight to download shows, and reasonably expect the DVR to turn itself back on later in the day when a show to record comes up ?

It won't turn itself "on" in the bluelight "on" sense, but yes it will still record any scheduled recordings while "off." The only thing turning a ReplayTV "off" really does is keep it from buffering (recording) live TV and turns off the TV output.

If have the unit off and it starts to record it's the same as having it on, basically(as j.m. just said). The recording will interfere with your maxium bandwidth demands. However, if you are downloading on schedule--in the middle of the night for example--there is no need to hurry the shows. You can turn the max transfer to, say, 350. The recording and scheduled transfers will both go fine. Or, heck, in the middle of the day whenyou are actively using the replayTV you could turn the transfer down to, say, a measly 200/sec and use the replay as always. Or, if you are in a hurry, just look to make sure nothing is scheduled to record over the next hour or two and bring the transfer >1000/sec, turn off the replaytv and let it rip. The downside to this is you do have to wait for the transfer to complete even though it's faster and you may have nothign to do in this time frame--you can't watch TV (unless you do it live directy through the TV). The only time I do this is if I'm doing a massive transfer and go live at Liz's for a few days(Well, actually, now I have 2 replays so I just watch the other one)

My casual obervations are that a replay will do >1000/sec if the replay is turned off and nothing is recording, or ~600/sec if the replaytv not being used and recording. Recording awhile transfering at ~600/sec may be unstable though. Recently I've done this with no problems, but other times I've had problems doing stuff like that. Others may have looked closer and done more tests and have more refined information.

Everyone is so darn helpful ! I should probably make this a seperate post but in the interest of not cluttering the board with newbie posts ..

My replay doesn't seem to show any of the shows that I have moved to my DVA ? Yes DVA is setup as a server and serving, when i press the replay guide button on my remote in the top right i do not have the "Family Room" description with the ability to choose another DVR to play from ?

Not just the arrows are missing, there is nothing in that corner of the screen, is this functionality changed since the manual printing ? (like so many things :)

No, sounds like you are doing it correctly (other than it will actually say "This ReplayTV" when you are browsing the current RTV). Here are a few things to try.

1) Try 243-zones Option #17 ("Find all units" or similar). Hopefully, you will see a message indicating that it found your DVA server, and you should then be able to navigate to it as you described.

2) Failing that, is there a green light next to "Server" in DVA (look at the bottom right part of the DVA window)? I think you are saying it is in your post but want to be sure.

3) Make sure you don't have a software firewall running on the DVA PC that is blocking the necessary communications between DVA and the RTV.

Note: There is a lot of troubleshooting info on DVA in the DVA Online FAQs, accessible via http://www.dvarchive.org

Almost all the info in it is "up to date". There are a few things that changed between DVA V2.x and 3.x, but only a few and those are mostly ones dealing with the contents of the DVArchive.xml. The network troublshooting section is defintely a place to start.
