I rented the hd download through psn. It was decent, assuming you are into the game. Don't expect a full cg entourage like Final Fantasy Spirits Within, of course.
Think of it more like the old Aeon Flux animated series from the '90's.

The ending really puts the cherry on top with the music theme that signifies the game. Chills ran down my spine.

I don't know how good of a movie it makes standing on its own. It's a perfect complement to the videogame, and that's how I think it was intended.

^^^ Agreed.

I've seen it and it complements the video game nicely - nothing to write home about, but if you played the game, it's worth watching to find out what happened up to the point where the game starts. I don't think it's anymore then 90 minutes, if that.

hello all,

anyone seen dead space??

The animation for Dead Space is sub-par, and the gore is set to overload. Meaning, if you're even the least bit squeamish, I would NOT recommend watching it (Blu-ray or not).

Story is passable, along the lines of the game (if you've played it on PS3, then you know what to expect).

If you're a fan of gore and horror, and like movies like Resident Evil in space, then I would wait until it goes on sale for $15 on Amazon and pick it up.

Its not worth more than $15 in my opinion.

Actually the movie is the middle part of the story, there are narrated comics available for download on the Xbox 360 (and maybe PS3) that tell the first part of the story. Those 2 combined with the game make up a decent Sci-Fi/Horror combo. I agree that on it's own, the movie is nothing special.

I watched them all, as they came out!
This was a milestone production effort by EA, I'm pleased to say (as opposed to just releasing some new game on a disc). The narrated comics were a great vehicle to get you hooked into the storyline so that game is on your mind for the time it becomes available. The movie hits you in yet another avenue to put that game on your mind (and alternately, the game makes you curious enough to find out what is in the movie). I'm sure it was a great deal of extra work to integrate all of these elements as well as they did, so I can only applaud the effort. The investment in artistic elements and styling was very ambitious across the board. I don't know if this was just a unique approach as an integrated marketing strategy for this title or do they plan to employ the formula for other titles. I look forward to see what they come up with, if they do...

I'm definitely a living-case for a demographic being compelled to get this game, that would not normally expose myself to this game. I'm really not into the over the top gore/horror scene. I'm not into Resident Evil or Silent Hill. I've tried them, but never stuck it out to the end of the game. However, I was totally bought and sold for Dead Space. I'm not saying I suddenly found an appreciation for gore/horror, either.

The intense imagery in this game still gives me a headache and edgy feeling like "This environment really does not give me a pleasant sensation. I'd wish I were as dead as all these corpses laying around, if I was really stuck in this situation. I can really identify with the few npc's encountered on the ship that are utterly shellshocked out of their mind by the whole situation...just rocking listlessly waiting to be inevitably slaughtered or finally doing themself in"...but I remain addicted to playing it through (going on my 2nd time through, right now). Granted, the sci-fi element is a strong aspect to draw my interest. However, I still feel the animated comic series was a critical component to really captivate my attention, considering this genre of game. The movie is a nice follow-through to put a fitting cap on the experience of this game.

Agreed. LOVED the game, and the movie is a good companion to the game, but probaly would not be a good stand alone for those not into the game.

Totally stolen from Bioshock. So is the tram system. Have they no shame. And the environment outside of you has no oxygen.

But the story is so much weaker. Budget can't compete with good writing. Even though I think Dead Space is way overhyped; It's still a hell of a lot of fun to play(especially in the dark, turn off the heater during winter while you play
) and I love all of the blood and violence.

Only thing I didn't like was that all of the enemies were triggered by crossing an invisible line. The game was nothing but a big shooting gallery, and impossible mode was anything but. It does work as a scary amusement park ride, and surround sound makes it so much better. Hopefully EA can get this right on the sequel.

Next time bundle the BD with the game EA you dunces. Because the story is way too weak for me to want to seek out more of it. I'll wait to watch on one of the encore channels(they have every direct to dvd movie ever). There's better horror on BD than Dead Space though.

Actually they're both a rip-off of System Shock 2. Dead Space just rips it off a lot-more, and removed a crazy, stuttering computer with a crazy religious cult.

Which fits nicely with the theory that this game was intended to be System Shock 3, but EA changed the name fearing it would turn people away after all these years

Yeah, I was going to comment that it would be damn near impossible in this day and age to truly come up with something "original" for sci-fi. All the good stuff has surely been done long ago.

What's with all these "Shadow..." usernames?

actually EA owns the rights to the name system shock and EA had nothing to do with Bioshock. where Irrational Games, now known as 2K Boston/2K Australia, own the rights to everything else to do with system shock. so yes bioshock is basically system shock 3 but 2K had to name it something else since EA has the rights to the name system shock.

On January 9, 2006, GameSpot reported that EA had renewed its trademark protection on the System Shock name

This animation was extremely low quality, and with BD, you can only see the poor quality clearer. The sound is almost muffled, very unexciting. I love the RE movies and all things videogame related, but this was completely unnecessary. Maybe if it came free with the game it would make a decent extra, but really an extended rendered intro cut scene for the game would have been more interesting. I always encourage game makers to draw people in in different ways and I love cross media stuff usually, but this was low budget, like someone said, imagine a long gory saturday morning cartoon... from 1990. And I was actually a bit pained to hear Bruce Boxleitner dropping the F bomb. I'm not opposed to profanity when it fits, but it was completely gratuitous in much of this and I just didn't care to hear Commander Sheridan cussing.

glad I only rented from netflix. I wont be watching this again.

Let's be fair, now...how many straight-to-video releases have rocked your world? I don't think it should be compared (or expected to be on par) with other titles that were official theatrical releases.
