I am looking for a decent 7.1 speaker package to match up with a onkyo 606 receiver. I know the hts7100 is an HTIB with receiver and speakers but I got a good deal on the stand alone receiver and am trying to match up a set of speakers to save some cash.

I just want decent soung without a bunch of distortion.. price is key..

best bang for the buck.

The HTS7100 is around $700, which is a very good start for starting a home theater system. Would you be opposed to building a 5.1 system right now, and then adding another two speakers in the future? How big is your room? There are a lot of options for you if you build separates, Energy and Infinity are two that come in mind (the C-100 and the Beta 20s, respectively). Both can be found at bargain prices, and are much better than the HTS7100.

I'm not opposed to a 5.1 right now. The room is small about a 13 ft by 13ft.. and the way it is with the couch at the back wall I probably don't really have room for a 7.1. I would probably have to do somesort of ceiling mount or flush mounts for the 2 middle speakers any way. The rears are going to have to be mounted up and pointing down as well. The room is far from perfect for surround but that is all I have to work with.

looking at going seperate and it with stands and seperate pairs, centers, and sub looks like it is going to be pricey.. I understand that the speakers you suggested probably blow away the onkyos that are in the HTS7100.. are there any decent 5.1 bundled speaker sets out there.

They don't need to be put on stands ;-) Ikea side tables work! ^^

But anyways, here are a few recommendations for 5.1 systems:

Mirage Omni 5.1 w/ Velodyne VX-10 Subwoofer $650 Shipped
Pretty incredible deal, and will fit great in your room.

The Speaker Company has some nice packaged deals, especially their T series speakers. Free shipping for both ways (if you don't like them, you can return them within 30 days and they'll pay for shipping).

AV123 dot com has a very nice 5.0 system (ELT525) going for $599 ($698 shipped), but the company has had some issues with their MFW-15 subs lately, among a few other things. Generally, ordering speakers in stock is safe from them (I ordered a pair of ELT525Ms from them a few weeks ago). The build quality is incredible, and the ELT525s are my favorite speakers that I own (and I own more expensive stuff as well). Caveat emptor, though, but I think it's a safe bet for the ELTs.

If you live near one of their stores, the Energy C-50 5.0 package can be had for $250, leaving you plenty of room for a sub (PA-120, TSC ASW-10, etc.) and some speaker stands.

Anyways, I'll let more experienced members post their thoughts as well. Hope that gives you a good starting ground! Don't forget to leave a bit of room for speaker wire! Monoprice 12AWG FTW.
