I set FFDShow as the default Video Decoder for VMC using the Vista MediaCenter Decoder Utility, it works fine for all compressed video types. However when I try to launch a DVD from VMC I get the error:

Decoder Error

The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart the Windows Media Center or the computer.

I am trying to use FFDShow in place of the default MPEG-2 decoder so that I can upscale. Anyone have a solution to this error?

FFDShow + VMC + MPEG-2 Decoding = trouble. For some reason they just don't get on. When I tried to do this I had to install something called Mediacontrol to get FFDShow working with DVDs in VMC. It played the video but only with a dirty great green bar down the site which I couldn't get rid of to my satisfaction.

According to the Mediacontrol forum, there's a bug with FFDShow and VMC for MPEG-2 decoding and it's still not fixed.

It's a shame as I liked the idea of using FFDShow to upscale DVDs nicely - however since then I've realised that at a viewing distance of 10' on my 42" screen, the Powerdvd MPEG-2 codec is more than adequate really ie the extra benefits of FFDShow probably don't justify the hassle of getting it working.
