I have had this system for quite a while now.

BP2004 main, CLR 2002 center, BP6 rears.

I have set up the BP2004 both as full rage speakers and as small + sub ( using the receiver crossovers) etc .

I am not particularly satisfied with the powered subs on the 2004 towers.

Would I get better sub response by adding a external subwoofer ?

absolutely.

check the def tech thread for lots of reports. those 'subs' are really not. best to think of them as powered woofers in a full-range tower.

most use lfe out to a dedicated sub and use the dt powered towers set to small and crossed at 40-60hz.

I have the 2002TL's as left/right in my system...similar to your BP2004's. As has been discussed here many times before, the subs built in to your 2004's do not have settings like what can be found on a separate subwoofer. You only have a volume control adjustment on the sub right? Also, the issue of placement comes in to play. The best location for the subs might not be the best location for the main speakers. Set up properly you should be getting a convincing amount of bass, however. BTW, I have my 2002TL's set to small and 80HZ crossover.
