Def Tech Mythos ST, STS or Paradigm Reference Studio 100

Hello,

I am trying to buy a new speaker system and eying on Def Tech ST, STS and Paradigm Reference Studio 100.

Choice 1: Def Tech ST: A pair of ST, Mythos 10 (Center) and 2 Gem XLs for surrounds.

Choice 2: Def Tech STS: A pair of STS, Mythos 9 and Gem XLz for surrounds.

Choice 3: Paradigm Reference 100: A pair of 100, CC590 or 690 (Center)a pair of 20s for surrounds

I have a JL Audio Fathos 112 so I don't need another sub.

My room is rather small 12' x 14' with 9' ceiling and is closed. I do music and movie just about 50/50. Mainly classical music and appreciate deep bass. But I don't really listen pipe organ stuff. More violin, piano and orchestra works as well as vocals. The reason I like Def Tech is space saving. Also they have rave reviews. Many say they are the best sounding speakers in their price range. I also chose Pardigm speakers for rave reviews too. Paradigm speakers are a little bigger but not so big. I think I can accomodate them. Cost wise (retail):

Choice 1: Main $4,000, Center $899 and Surrounds $700 --- Total $5,599

Choice 2: Main $3,000, Center $799 and Surrounds $700 --- Total $4,499

Choice 2: Main $3,000, Center $1,499 or $1,199 and Surrounds $1,200 --- Total $5,700 or$5,400

Choice 1 and Choice 3 are close. Choice 2 is ablout a grand less.

I would appreicate your opinion. I have not auditioned any of them and I don't think I can do it. So I will have to purchase one of the three without giving them a listen. Your opinion is greatly precious. Thank you.

Bump....

Is it not popular to comapre Def Tech Mythos to Paradigm speakers????

I appreciate your opinion! Thank you in advance.

You need to listen to these speakers yourself. The STs have got rave reviews so I went to hear them. I was not impressed. Maybe it was a crappy setup. Lots of bass but everything else sounded distorted. When I heard the Audio Physic Sitara I knew in the first 30 seconds they were much better. They can't do the bass the STs do but you have a JL Audio sub so you don't need speakers that are bass heavy. Just because reviewers rave about a speaker doesn't mean you'll like them. Same thing happened many years ago where reviewers raved about an Infinity speaker that didn't impress me. So listen before you buy.
I auditioned both Def Techs and Paradigm Studios at Audio Concepts. I was not impressed with the Def Techs nor was I impressed with Paradigm's monitor line. I was getting ready to walk out the door when the salesman introduced the studio line. He only had the 60's in stock, but man these blew me away. From that point, I knew I had found my speakers.

Again, you need to go listen for yourself.
Michael,

Where in CA are you located? I will have the Studio 100's paired with a CC690 and the Mythos ST and Ten setup in a couple weeks if you want to cruise and listen to them in an actual home versus a demo setup. I really liked both setups for different reasons, hence why I went with both setups to be used in different rooms. Personally, I found the STS (couldn't demo the ST) to be much fuller and in your face than the Paradigms. They were more dynamic and definately packed a larger punch due to the build in subs. However, to me the Paradigms had a more warm and neutral sound, which with the superior center gave a whole new level of realism during movie content and acoustic music. However, the Paradigms require a sub without a doubt and needed more wattage to drive them in comparison to the STS.

STS get the nod for hip hop, rock, HT explosiveness, and slim profile. The Paradigms get the nod classical, acoustic, and vocals during HT. If your budget allows some serious power and the addition of a sub, I preferred the Paradigms, but if you want simplicity in setup and running off of an AVR then the Mythos may be for you.

Very nice blueboxer....

Thanks for your thoughts on the comparison
I dont know where you are getting the prices from ?

I listened to the studio 100's and they are probably one of the best speakers ever made..

The studio 100's combo with studio 20 and the cc590 I was quoted $4490.00 and thats in canadian funds that would equal to approximately $4100 us dollars according to the latest currency rates......

If you had bought them earlier they would cost around $3300 us because the canadian currency has climbed back upto .92 cents 3 months ago is was around 72 cents.
Sergeant,

I believe the prices I quoted were right prices for the latest models. Or if you know better prices, please pm me.

Blueboxer,

Thank you for your imput and your pms for a few days. I really appreciate your kindness. I know you are getting 2 setups running soon. Keep me posted on your fiindings about the difference of the two.

I see here and there discounted Def Tech speakers now. But not much with Paradigm speakers. If anyone knows good place to shop for the Paradigm let me know.

Is Def Tech going though some financial troubles now? Why all of a sudden some internet sites are flooded with discounted Def Tech speakers???

Probably just the cost the dealers pay directly to Paradigm or Def Tech, different margins allow different levels of discounts. The most I have ever received off of Paradigm was about 35%, but older versions or slower selling cabinets colors might allow for a slightly greater discount. The Mythos have been out far longer than the new Studio v5 series has, so again, that might have some bearing on the discounts offered. Shop around and don't be afraid to tell dealers what others are offering and that you are price oriented. Overall my Paradigm and Def Tech systems will cost about the same, despite the higher MSRP of the Def Techs, but the need for a sub with the Paradigms makes that system overall more expensive as well as the ADP's being pretty costly. I would go with the monitor series ADPs to save a little their and definately go with a sub other than Paradigm.

Just out of curiosity, what websites were you looking at? I have been trying to decide on whether to buy a Def Tech STS/ST or a Paradigm 100 and found this thread to be very helpful. I don't see many used ST/STS out on the market right now (unfortunately)... just mostly new and refurbs. Did you end up purchasing the ST/STS or the Reference 100?
