getting pro1000 center, 800 surround, would i be better geting studio 45's for L/R or stick with the 1000's

SM45's are better speakers all around. Maybe after you get them you will see what you are missing and get the matching center to them.

Yes, or another SM45 if you can do a vertical center

I'm thinking about the Studio 45's as well to replace my Klipsch Quintet speakers (at least across my front soundstage). My basement area is my secondary theater area and I don't have the space for towers or even larger bookshelves. The Quintets are very nice, however, they sound like "small" speakers (because they are) and I'd like to take a step up. I'm thinking the 45's and a matching center channel (or a third 45) would do well.

If you have the space, a third identical speaker is always batter - how could anything else give you a seamless audio pan across the screen to match the action.


Reality is, most people don't have the space to accommodate a third identical speaker.

Agreed on the identical center speaker issue - I have an M&K S150 set in my primary theater and love it (but finding room for a center that size was not easy). Unfortunately, my basement area has a walk-out sliding glass door and fireplace which make placing the TV in the corner a necessity. The soundstage is quite compressed (i.e., the three speakers are close together) and I'd likely need to install in-walls for the rears if I changed out the Quintet rears. So, I'd have Def Tech across the front with Quintet in the rear. I'd prefer identical all the way around but the room makes this really tough...

If you decide to go with the PM1000s, I'd suggest upgrading your center to the PC2000. Bad nomenclature on Def Techs part because the ProCenter 2000 is the actual match to the PM1000s. The ProCenter 1000 matches the PM800s.


I haven't heard the SM 45s, but I'd recommend the SM450 (or even the SM350s) speaker over the PM1000s (I own both). The SM450 casts a much wider soundstage than the PM1000 and was a definite improvement when I upgraded. I ran SM450 LR and the PC2000. Great combination.

Yes, IMO the PC2000 is the better match for the SM45 or the PM1000; same size drivers (identical to the PM1000) in a more similar-size enclosure. Don't choose the PC1000.


Three identical speakers will always be the best choice if they're physically installable. But the PC2000 is a surprisingly great speaker. I've matched it with the PM1000, SM350, and BP8B, and it's worked well with all of them; DT timbre-matches quite well across their entire line and even across generations.
