Also, I only need 2 channel audio, if that matters

I like the 1 cable hdmi solution, but should I just use vga w/ separate audio cable? Would it be cheaper? Any issues with video/audio sync with hdmi vs. vga w/audio cable?

Off-loading only works if the playback software supports it. The best hardware would be useless if the software cannot take advantage of it.

Assuming that it will be able to; any motherboard with the following chipsets should do it.

AMD: ATI 780G/785G/790, Nvidia 8200/8300

Intel: Intel G45, Nividia 9300/9400

There are newer Intel chipsets but they would cost more. The cheapest are the ATI chipsets for AMD processors (anywhere between $50-80).

All of the above are fully capable of decoding Full 1080p HD video with audio; you wouldn't need a separate audio or video card. Almost all boards made with these chipsets come with HDMI out

I'm looking at a used pc locally tonight that has an amd64 3500+ cpu and unknown ati graphics card for $150. Hopefully it will be good enough for my needs or can be built upon fairly cheaply. Adobe says this cpu is good enough for hd flash playback.

As long as it has a PCI-E 16x slot you should have little trouble being able to upgrade to a video card which can do decoding. You should be able to find cards in the $40-50 range which will meet your needs. As long as it has a power supply that is 350W you should be fine.
