Greetings:

Well, much to my surprise, the Denon AVR-5700 has a significant design flaw. I may not explain this quite as succinctly or eloquently as I should but here goes.

The unit does hot have the ability to accept inputs from an equalizer. It has pre-amp outs, but no pre-amp ins (I think that's how it's explained). So, you're screwed if you want to connect the unit to say, a THX Equalizer, because there's no way to get the output of the Eq back into the receiver.

Now, I suppose that there might be a work-around that requires modification of the unit, and I know someone is actually looking into it, but come on now! How could Denon be so short sighted, so stupid?

Does anyone else out there (I know Jeff K. is) affected by the problem? Has anyone talked to Denon about it?

Best Regards,

Darryll

Major, major, major design flaw! Room EQ is essential to high res HT audio. Amazing that Lucasfilm would not require that to be a required capability.

When I went shopping for a Home THX receiver, I knew my large room would need EQ, and I looked for pre-outs and main-ins. I have the Audio Control Bijou THX EQ. Marantz and Onkyo have THX receivers with this capability.

Good luck.

Your choices for preouts and power ins on all six channels are the Marantz SR 18 and 19 and the new H/K AVR 7000.

It's a major design flaw of all other receivers.

Apart from the EQ suggestion, if you have full power ins and decide to upgrade your main channel power amps you would still have spare channels for biamping, passive subs, spare room systems or whatever. Not to mention that I suspect most receivers would perform better as preamps if you physically separated them from their power amps rather than just tapping the output.

Also, is it good for a power amp to run with no load, as happens when you use a receiver with outboard amps?

I would have to concur that this is a "design mis-queue" particularily for a THX Ultra certified piece of equipment ... forgivable on Select. (I have made this point to the Lucas folk.)

While the Yamaha has this ability and is a seven channel system, its extra 2 effects channel are up front rather than support a more "traditional" side/rear set up. The Harmon Kardon and Marantz do indeed have this capability but I have yet to find it on a seven channel (side/rear) receiver ... perhaps, I could be educated here.

I would gently suggest berating someone for their lack of research is rather over the top here. There's a limit on what you can find out without actually using a unit (for example ... did you know the Denon 5700 amps only five channels ... side/rear share the same amp channels? ... did you know you can individually set the delay for the sides and rears but cannot individually set the SPL? ... that is a major big time gaff IMHO).

And none of this information is stated in ANY of Denon's literature. In fact, the SPL/Delay issue for the sides and rears is not even stated in the User Manual! You can only discover that "gaff" by noticing a missing item in the set up menu. Not easy if you don't know what you're looking for.

Manufacturers are very quick to point out what they consider benefits and cannot be expected to point out their shortcomings.

I'm afraid you will find that receivers with pre-main coupling for all six channels is going to be few and far between.

If you are going through the expense of a 6 channel THX eq, then you are just one step away from getting an outboard power amp.

A viable argument for seprates http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Steve asked, "is it good for a power amp to run with no load,as happens when you use a receiver with outboard amps" I'm considering

using my Yamaha RX-V793 as a preamp and adding an external 5 channel amp. I would be very interested in someones comments on that question.
