Has anyone heard of an EX upgrade in the pipeline (chip) by Denon for their 5700 (AVCA1D in europe) reciever/amp?

I know that Denon are going to market the 5800 but the 5700 is such a brilliant machine that I really dont want to part with it after only a year just for the sake of EX and a few tweeks.

If all else fails get the Smart or the ADA out board processors. They will work great with the 5700.

I will probably go for the smart, and may I also say I will be purchasing this unit from AVS along with other upgrades in the next couple of months. Countless satisfied members have posted so many good things about the service and fair prices.

Its only fair that we support AVS as much as possible in gratitude for this really great forum. Lets keep it going.

Don't expect an upgrade to the 5700. Architecturally, it would be an expensive mod requiring not only a chip, but two additional amplifiers (two additional channels).

Take a look at the AVR-4800 which Denon is marketing now. They are also marketing a 2-channel external amp for the EX channels. The POA-5200 amp connects to the 4800 for 7.1 sound. I'm surprised that they haven't come out with information on using this amp with the 5700 for 7.1. They marketed the 5700 as future-proof with expandability. Guess that wasn't cost effective. :^(

I know that the 5700 does not have 2 more chanels of amplification, but as stephen suggested, Denon make a two chanel amp that would sit nicely with the 5700.....I was just hoping that they would market an EX chip, so all you need was the amp+chip.

The new Denon EX reciever has had some great reviews here but I honestly dont want to upgrade (if you can call it that) to a cheaper and less powerfull reciever just for the sake of EX.

I would also have to still add the extra Denon 2 chanel amp.

Here's my 2 cents.


The Denon 5800 is supposed to be out in July or August. Post your 5700 on ebay and you should probably get $1200 for it. That's a guess but you can check the closed sales and see what they are going for. Then put that money towards the new 5800. Just a suggestion.

Actual measurements (not Denon's) taken from the 4800 show it to be Denon's most powerful receiver.

However, I'm not convinced that EX is worth upgrading from the 5700 to the 4800. If I was going to upgrade, it would be to a pre/pro with good bass management (which the Denon sorely lacks).

Get a Smart Jr.,I did,I use it with my Marantz AV 9000 pre.If your room is relatively small use one EX speaker,not two.This is a mono channel and the only advantage to using two speakers is if you must fill a large room with sound.

If one speaker is all you need,I'd suggest a Marantz mono-block amp.EX is a nice tweek for action movies, particularly.

Or you can buy a MC-1 off Ebay for under $4000 and sell you Onkyo 989 on Ebay for whatever and get the MC-1 even cheaper again.

It works fine with any 5.1 material wheather it's DD or DTS. This supposed new 6.1 DTS format would I think be better,discreet.But,I know of NO hardware!Furthermore,I don't want any more upgrades at this time,I've only had EX for less than 2 months! The EX system enhances any 5.1 recording.The second thing I watched with it was THE JACKAL DTS LD and it seemed as if it was recorded wih EX in mind or encoded with EX. Even the AC-3 remix of EL CID LD had it's EX moment,during a thunder storm that seemed all-around. Nobody seems to know what bloody 6.1 DTS is all about!!! Certainly,not I.....
