Does anyone have any info on what new features the Denon 5910 will have compared to the 5900? I am currently considering the 5900, but was wondering if I would be missing out on something that was just around the corner. HDMI is not a big deal, but I wouldn't mind having WM9 HD ability.

...and can someone explain what macroblocking is and has it been "fixed" on the 5900 yet?

Anyone with some input!? What features are still not working on the 5900? This player seems to pass the most tests on Secrets, has a pretty flat video frequency response, has DVD-A/SACD with decent base management, and contrast/brightness control over DVI.

I currently own a Pioneer563 and Bravo D1. The Bravo D1 looks good but I cannot fine tune the brightness or contrast and it still has some quirks and no DVD-A/SACD. The Pioneer has red push, poor layer change, and the bass management sucks....not to mention the picture seems overly dark even when properly calibrated with Avia.

If you do a search, you will see many a thread in concern to the 5900 and speculation about the next models. Hit that DenonJEff thread for starters...

I saw that thread, which is why I posted this question. They mention the new models coming out (5910) but I did not see any specifics of what this new model will have other than possibly HDMI, which I am not interested in. So if you know any extra info on the 5910 and how it will differ from the 5900 please let me know or point me to a specific thread or reply. :p

Nobody knows... that's why you aren't getting any answers. All the rumours are available in the threads you've already read.

The 3910 is supposed to be out in July/August, months before the 5910 and Denon still hasn't released any info on it. Be patient. There are no details yet but you can rest assured that they will be on this forum the minute the details go public.

Max -

I am with you on this. I feared asking the same question for the very response you got.

That thread is 15+ pages long...which is fine if you've been following it for a while. I wish for both our sakes someone could make a synopsis of specs...even if it is just speculation...on both the 3910 and the 5910.

BTW, Integra's DPS 10.5 should be coming out soon (June/July). Although rarely mentioned here, I suspect it will be a direct competitor to the 5900/5910.

Integra??? Isn't that sold at Walmart. (kiddin')

Max,

Don't let the 'macroblocking' issue scare you. It's really not a problem and almost never shows itself. The only time I have seen it is on solid black credits. I've been using my 5900 for over 6 months and it still betters my D1 and every other DVI upscaling player out. No, it's not perfect, but it's the closest yet.

Find a deal on one and buy it. You'll be very happy. Most owners of the 5900 are extremely happy with the PQ. Unlike the Pioneer 59i with the HDMI problems and the new 841 which seems to be returned faster than they're being bought.

Ernie,

Easy on Integra.

I understood it to be used mostly by custom installers.

Thanks for the 5900 macroblocking comment though. What is the deal with apsect ratio control?

Max the new 5910 features(speculation of course)

-no macroblocking, will also be fixed on 5900 as well

-HDMI and dvi interface.

-aspect ratio control over dvi(almost positive about this one).

-pure direct mode and sacd dvd audio control buttons found on the remote.

-Maybe wm9 but i dont think so.

-no dsd convertion even with source direct on.

I can live without most of these features except macroblocking, which hopefully is being fixed as we speak.

Regards!

I'll take a guess also....

- Fixed macroblocking (don't bet the farm that this can be fixed on the 5900, or they likely would have been able to do it by now)

- Fixed visible layer changes on some DVDs

- Fixed slow menu changes

- HDMI output, rather than DVI output

- same form factor (same external case size)

- $500.00 more expensive

I thought that I read directly from DenonJeff somewhere that the next patch for the Denon 5900 would include the macroblock fix and increase the speed of the menu change, and possibly fix the aspect problem with the DVI connection.

I am surprised to hear that there is a visible layer change on the 5900 as it reads ahead and does it very fast. HDMI is something I would never use, as I don't see myself changing my Halo processor anytime soon and I would never send sound to my TV, plus this would mean a new HDMI to DVI cable.

So if anyone can confirm that the fixes I listed above are in the works for the 5900 and that the 5910 will not be able to playback WM9 HD, I will be purchasing the 5900. In order to do WM9 it would require a new Silicone chipset or Real Magic, which may mean a whole new set of problems. My only other choice for a Universal player is the new Samsung 941 and something tells me it just can't compare on the audio side...thanks everyone.

Any chance the 5910 will be offered in silver? :p

Will the 5910 cover all bases and also upconvert to 720p and 1080i or even 1080p?

Since that's supposed to be the grand king of all players, I should expect it to do everything under the sun, right?

The 5910 will have DVD-A and SACD and will up-convert 480i to 480p, 720p, and 1080i. However, 1080p is doubtful unless it can play WM9 (windows media 9) discs which come as 720p and 1080p....which is why I am interested in it as a feature. The new Bravo D3 will have this capability but does not play DVD-A or SACDs.

This would require a new chipset however, and this new chipset may not pass all the tests done by Secrets of HomeTheater HiFi that the 5900 passed.
