Denon AVR 2800 - What kind of connection when using Speaker Front A + B simultaneous?

4413 Views 11 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bobknavs
Hi folks,

With reference to the subject above, I'm wondering whether the Denon AVR 2800 enable parallel or series connection when activating 2 speaker front A + B at the same time? I'm using a pair of 6 Ohm speakers (power rating 350W per speaker) to connect to Speaker Front A. I intend to use another pair of 8 Ohm speaker (power rating 200W per speaker, I guess) to connect to speak front B. Is that okay to activate both Speaker front A + B (impedance, power consumption)?

Another question is that what kind of sub woofer better used for Denon AVR 2800? The sub woofer has power itself or the sub woofer has power provided by amplifier (so sorry, I don't know the exactly words for these kind of sub woofer)? How to connect them together (sub woofer and amplifier)? I attached the photo right in this post, is the place where I cover the green frame for connecting sub woofer and amplifier? If yes, what is the RCA named Front used for in CENTER?

Thank you so much.

I don't know whether the 2800 permits A+B (both speaker sets driven at the same time). If it does, the speakers will be in electrical parallel. If they were 8 ohm speakers, the load on the receiver will be 4 ohms. Not recommended.

The subwoofer output is intended for a powered subwoofer. It's a "line level" output; provides nearly zero power. The other 3 RCA jacks are line-level outputs for the left, center, and right channels. They could be connected to external amplifiers if you wanted more power than the receiver can supply.

Does it still work? it could be 20 years old.

Thanks for your quick reply. It's still working well even though I left it alone for many years. Now I bring it back to use. I connect it with a pair of Whaferdale 3190 which was customized the impedance to be 6 Ohm (originally 4 Ohm) in order to work harmlessly with Denon AVR-2800. However I need more bass frequency so I intend to either connect one more pair of speakers which have more bass or a sub woofer to supply the bass sound.
/?
As you said, my amplifier only work with the powered sub woofer? How about the sub woofer that powered by amplifier?
1. Yes, as noted by the back panel of the 2800 (the image you posted), it can power A+B when using 6-16 ohm speakers.
2. Only use a sub that has power itself.

Thanks for your information. What kind of connection when powering A+B? Parallel or Series?

As bobknavs already noted, parallel so don't raise the volume very high when using A+B.

Would you recommend running two pairs of 6 ohm speakers in parallel (3 ohm load)?

Does the 2800 permit A+B? (I wasn't able to find a definite answer in online docs.) Of course, two pairs of speakers could be wired to the same output posts, but you'd lose the ability to switch.

Look at the plate on the back of the 2800.

And?

There are separate A and B output post sets. I don't see anything on the back that indicates whether the front panel switches permit both to be active at the same time.

(It's certainly possible. I had an old NAD integrated amp that permitted, A, B, or A+B.)

Look closer. Specifically to the right of the Front A speaker posts. It indicates "A+B" and yes, any Denon that features separate A and B speaker posts can run them as A+B.

Yes, it does permit Front A+B active at the same time into 8 - 16 ohm. However, you two said that it's parallel connection, it may harm my amplifier. So I'm happy with a pair of 6 ohm speakers. :) I will probably connect a powered sub woofer to increase the bass sound.

Anyway, many thanks for your help bobknavs & jdsmoothie. I really appreciate that.

Cheers.

Thanks, Mr. Holmes. I saw but did not observe.:)
