denon avr-4306 setup

I just received the 4306 and it's my first 7.1 a/v receiver. I intend to grow into it so for now I only have a single pair of book shelf speakers to hook up. Can I just hook them up as front left and right speakers leaving nothing hooked up for the rest of the channels? is this harmful to the amp? should I hook up as left/right zone 2, leaving nothing hooked up to the 7.1 speakers? I am totally confused.

Yes. Modern receivers will downmix multi-channel soundtracks to however many speakers you have. So even with 2 speakers connected, you'll always hear 100% of the sound.

No. On the contrary, it will be able to deliver more power to 2 speakers compared to running 7 speakers simultaneously.

What does Zone 2 have to do with listening to stereo in your main zone? Hook up your speakers to the front L/R connectors, set all other speakers to NONE in the speaker set-up menu, and you're done. Nothing more complicated than that.

Good Luck,
