Denon AVR-X4400H, Surround/Atmos Not Working

4097 Views 26 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  GetDowney
Weird issue...
Successfully ran speaker setup with confirmed audio in all speakers. Running a 7.2.2.
Playing through my LG OLED77C9PUB.
When playing a source that I know for sure supports Dolby Digital/Atmos, including a YouTube Dolby Digital 7.1 speaker test. The only speakers that work are the fronts, center and subs.
I've tried everything...well maybe not, which is why I'm making this post.

YouTube streams only stereo. As you can see in your 2nd picture, you have only stereo input.
Try from Netflix or Disney or download sample files with multi-channel audio and try. some sample available at ¦› Dolby Demo Trailers HD and SD – List of All Downloads (demolandia.net)

YouTube on my service streams more than stereo. On my Denon in another room, powered by an AVR-X3700H, with basically the same TV (LG OLED, but latest model), it successfully identifies each speaker on the YouTube test.
Also, surround speakers are not coming on with Netflix.
I'm hoping this is just some sort of setting I have wrong, but can't find it. I did a factory reset on my LG/OLED, and besides being a pain in the ass to get everything back to where it was, made no difference.
I may try to do a reset on my Denon, but do not know how to do that.
Any further thoughts would be appreciated.
Also, is there a different thread that would be more appropriate for my post?
Thanks,
Mike

Why does it say your signal is Analog? That doesn't seem right. My x3300 never says that
Analog signal?

That's not gonna give you anything near surround, LOL!

Like @Sr2160 said, you're inputting a 2 channel signal. despite what you believe about your youtube, the problem lies somewhere between youtube and before your receiver. is whatever you're playing youtube on set to output more than 2 channel signal? is the youtube video you picked 2 channel despite other multi channel offerings? are you using a cable that supports more than 2 channel audio? the proof is in your screenshot, its not the receiver. you're giving it 2 channels so unless you select multi channel audio or some other preset that upmixes to more than 2 channels, you will only get 2 channel audio.
You need to use a better test source than Youtube. You also need to figure out why your signal is analog. Oh and your height speakers don't look like they have been configured either.
I think this thread can be closed, it's not going surround because you have an analog input.

YouTube DOES output 5.1 Dolby Surround but only via the streaming app (on AppleTV, Shield, Roku, etc.) and only via HDMI, Optical, or Coaxial connection.

If you're connecting via RCA connectors, you're not going to have a digital signal and you're not going to have surround sound.

The reason I'm confused with the YouTube video is that it plays fine on my LG OLED in another room, running on a Denon AVR-X3700.
Let me ask a few more questions before shutting down this thread please...I have some more data that should be helpful.

What I have done since me last post is reset both the Denon and LG to factory settings.
That seemed to solve no surround on Netflix/Amazon, but still have the same issue on YouTube. I'm not too concerned about that since I'm getting surround on Netflix/Amazon and other streaming services that broadcast in multi channel
My Denon still shows Analog in setup. I have a separate HDMI input for the Denon. So there isn't any "source" for sound...right? Just curious as everyone is consistent with the Denon showing "Analog" in setup/info. When I switch over to the ARC/HDMI, then it's digital...right? This is a screen shot I just took. Again, I think Analog signal is showing bc I'm using a separate HDMI input that
goes directly from my Denon to my TV monitor.

This is the screen that briefly shows when I first enter the Denon

Here's what my Denon shows while playing a Dolby Vision - Atmos source on Netflix. It is not playing in Analog/2 channel:

Finally, there was a comment that my Ceiling/Atmos speakers were not configured. Not sure I understand that. A few screen shots showing my speaker config

Sorry for the long post...any input would be appreciated.

ARC shouldn't show as analog, no digital input should show as Analog

I also have a 4400h and output/signal is just fine.

Something is up with your configuration. You may need to do a factory reset and start over. I'm not sure what you have or have not done with the settings of your 4400.

I did a factory reset two days ago. The setup seems pretty straight forward so I can't figure out what I could be doing wrong.
Are you using a Blu-Ray player? Can you see if a disc gets sent to Atmos when it presents Atmos content?

ARC shouldn't be sent to analog. Somewhere, you have a setting set to Analog.

If you’re not running coax or optical, can you try disabling those? It should ease confusion and help you get closer to a solution

Yes...I did that.
Thanks
Doing factory resets is not going to help you if you don't have things hooked up right. You need to give more information about how exactly you have everything plugged in.
Okay. Through this series of pictures, I will attempt to show exactly how everything is plugged in. Also, I have taken screen shots of what I feel are all the salient Denon settings. Hope this help. If there's any other screen shots/info you want, just let me know. Thanks for your input.

Hi GetDowney, some things to check and test.

  • LG TV software version is updated
  • HDMI cable connected to LG TV ARC port to Denon Monitor 1 ARC port
  • LG TV Sound and Output settings (e.g. Simplink on, atmos on, passthrough on, eARC on or try eARC off for testing)
  • Denon select source to TV Audio input and not CBL/SAT input
  • Denon HDMI Video Output set to Monitor 1 instead of Auto (Dual) for testing
Thanks for the list of items to check.
First three bullets I confirmed
The 4th bolded bullet I need help on. Where/how do I do this? I tried to change TV Audio on the Input Assign area, but it won't allow changes unless HDMI Control is set to "Off". Not exactly sure how to do that.
Last bullet I can't figure out either.
Here are some screen shots that may help. The last two images are from my LG
