Denon DD Pro Logic IIx modes

458 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  sdurani
Hello-

I just bought Denon 2106 and I'm having trouble using the Pro Logic IIx modes. There are supposed to be Pro Logic IIx Music, Cinema and Game modes. I have a 6.1 set up and when I use Pro Logic IIx set up when watching 5.1 movie, the only option that this receiver allows me to set is Pro Logic IIx Music mode. I don't even have the option to switch it to Cinema or Game modes.

If I try stereo movies, it allows me to set to all modes. Is there something wrong with my receiver? Or is this just how it supposed to be?

Thanks.

Absolutely nothing wrong with your receiver; in fact it's a pretty good model.

With a 6.1-speaker set-up, the PLIIx Movie mode is the same thing as EX decoding (both modes are identical processing when applied to 5.1 soundtracks).

So with your speaker configuration, use the EX decoding mode, since it is the same as PLIIx Movie mode (that mode won't show up in your list of choices unless you have a 7.1-speaker set-up).

Sanjay-

Thanks for this info. I'm just curious. Where did you get this info and could you point me to such? I went and looked through Dolby website and couldn't find this info. The AV manual didn't say this either. Infact they sounded like Pro Logic IIx is much better than EX, is this true?

So with my 6.1 setup, what is the best setting on the receiver to watch 5.1 movie? Is it DD EX? Would it be better if I just tell the receiver that I have 2 S Back speakers instead of one so that I can use the Pro Logic IIx cinema mode?

I'm very new to this, thanks for your reply, Noske.

There is an extensive FAQ (frequently asked questions) about PLIIx on the Dolby site:

The benefit comes in when you have a 7.1-speaker set-up.

EX extracts a single surround-back channel, which means that the 2 rear speakers are run as dual-mono. PLIIx extracts two independent surround-back channels, so the 2 rear speakers are in stereo.

With a 6.1-speaker set-up, you can't have stereo rears (only one speaker behind you), so there's no advantage to PLIIx.

Yes. Also, if you can use upgrade to a 7.1 set-up, that would be better.

No. PLIIx will extract 2 independent surround-back channels and attempt to send them to both rear speakers. But since you'll only have one rear speaker connected, you won't hear half the sound. That information is lost.

Better instead to get another rear speaker and do a 7.1 layout to take full advantage of PLIIx processing.
