Denon DVD-2930 (Europe Region 2 version) - good news

Fellow enthusiasts...

I was reading the various threads on the DVD-2930CI here and was alarmed to read about several problems, particularly disc compatability...

And I had just bought a European 2930 (no CI label) and, due to a long business trip, it was just lying unopened in the box.

After reading the some posts I was scared to death that it couldn't read SACD, DVD-Audio, burned DVDs, took forever to load and navigation was slow.

Even though I don't have much time today, I rushed to unpack it and connect it up.

Connections: Component, optical audio and analogue audio. I tested it out of the box and did not change ANY factory settings.

Here are the results of trying various disc types:

DVD - NTSC (region 1): No problems

DVD - PAL (region 2): No problems

DVD - NTSC (region free): No problems

DVD - Audio: No problems loading, recognising and playing hi res layer

SACD: No problems loading, recognising and playing hi res layer

Redbook CD: No problems

DVD+R: No problems

DVD-R: No problems

For the burned media I tried 2 copies of each and let them play through (no use of any navigation controls) completely. Each disc has about 60mins of material. There wasn't any of the problems reported elsewhere.

All the disc types were loaded and recognised quickly. I would say the slowest was the burned media at 5 secs. Certainly I did not experience any of the 10 - 20 seconds or more mentioned on other threads.

Navigation on DVDs was fast enough as any other players I've seen or used.

Out of the box (480p) the picture looked great! Can't wait to get stuck in to trying HDMI, going through all the settings and doing some calibration.

I can calm down now...

Incidentally, it would seem that the unit was made in June 06, based on Denon's previous date coding in the serial number.

Wish everyone luck as always to enjoy our hobby,

Steve

How did you do this? Was it a region free player out of the box? :)

Yes, it is a region free player out of the box.

I bought it in Singapore (where I am currently stationed for my work). Denon Singapore imports and sells European based Region 2 players and they can be bought "region free ready".

A little more explanation:

Singapore, as a country, is mandated as a free trade zone. Therefore, to take advantage of the best titles, most of the good DVD shops sell Region 1 and Region 2 titles. Only the chain stores and supermarkets will usually sell the region 3 titles (which is Asia's official regional code). Therefore, most DVD hardware manufacturers such as Sony, Denon, Pioneer, et al..."officially" update the firmware to region free. This is usually done at the dealers premises. But please do not take "officially" to imply "legally" as allowed by the manufacturer's corporate headquarters or the DVD Forum group ;) . It is the decission of the manufacturer's local business office. It is the only country that I know of in Asia where the manufacturers will themselves update the firmware. It also makes good business sense for them to do it - because most DVDs sold are region 1.

It is yet to be seen what will happen with HD-DVD and BD since there are no models available here yet.

But I digress.....

Again in summary - The 2930 works like a dream "out of the box" and has, so far, played every disc I've thrown at it! I just hope I can get time this weekend to start the configuration process and setting up the HDMI...

I am very happy camper so far - so it will still be put to good use when I return to UK after completion of my assignment!

Kind regards,

Steve

P.S. I bought the 2930 to replace a Denon DVD-3800 and a very recently bought Sony upconverting HDMI player - the DVP-NS76H - both which were in my living room connected to a Sony 32" HD ready LCD. I'm afraid the Sony HDMI player didn't cut it on any output (HDMI or component) or configuration - I guess I was so used to the great PQ of the 3800.

Of course, my dedicated home cinema room uses a Denon DVD-A1XVA.... :) :D
