Why can't the manufacturer's build a DVD player that has everything we need and doesn't cost an arm-and-a-leg?

Let's post the DVD Player we would like them to build. Most of this is available in a HTPC, but that's both too much cost and way too many problems for most of us. And let's be realistic, it can't be illegal (i.e. no HDCP, multi-region or Macrovision defeatable)

It has to have...

A DVI output for a digital signal path.

Component outputs for older equipment.

Upscaling with HDCP.

User-adjustable Output Resolutions for different displays

No Chroma-bug.

Excellent De-interlacing.

Coaxial & Optical Audio Outputs.

Discrete Outputs & Plays DVD-Audio & SACD

Plays MP-3

Plays DVD-R

Plays DIVX

A UHF remote!

Cost under $750. That sounds reasonable.

What else?

Available in various colors so we can do a "stealth" up grade. Lets face it this is the MOST important feature!!!!!

It should also have:

a universal IEEE output for DVD-A and SACD

vertical stretching for non-anamorphic DVDs

Not wanting it to be illegal, just compatible with existing non-HDCP DVI display devices.

I think it is wery important not to forget the difference between what is laws and what is paragraphs in contracts that the DVD player manufacturers are made to follow by the licenses.

In our part of the world there are no laws against a DVD player to play different regions och output DVI without HDCP or anlogue output of 720p.

PS I am quite sure there are no laws against those kind of features even in the US.

Ultra Reliable, Strong Laser to read all the junky dvds we get from Netflix

Display of Title Set/PGC/Angle as on dvd (not some hokey renumbering)

Digital bass management on DVD-A and SACD without DSD to PCM conversion

Here’s another feature it should have:

Adjustable crossover frequency for the bass management.

Ah - bass management isn't nearly enough - you need individual line level and delay adjustment too for analog audio outputs (until ieee 1394 with all the copy protection becomes commonplace).

Also, it should be a blue-laser recorder capable of accepting ieee1394 input from a STB for HD recording. WM9 hardware decoder (the Equator chip) for all those WM9 files Artisan will hopefully start pumping out. Lightning fast layer change.

One Touch Time Remaining Display.

Internal Buffer for seamless layer changes.

S-Video and Component input for processing other sources (If it has the user selectible resolutions).

HDMI output.

How about a built in DVI switch so that we would be able to use another DVI device such as an HD satellite receiver and this dvd player and not have to switch cables.

Throw in a 300+ changer on it! And a color LCD panel on the front playing the movie back or showing DVD covers.:D

It should be no more than $399. if V Inc. makes it.

Add FireWire 1394 IEEE aka Meridian digital output for DVD-Audio, Multi-channel SACD. (Could be cheaper than mult-channel analog out.)

4-side picture picture masking.

What if we also add Ethernet input. What could you do with that?
