Do people even associate a product with a show nowadays?

There are so many channels and so many commercials, to me they all just intertwine. It's not like it was back in the day when Geritol sponsored Quiz show :D . More and more people will watch the show as sponsors pull out, and then there will be some more sponsors lining up.

Advertisers do not "pull the plug" to protect us from any evil, but to protect themselves.

Well, the Viagra and Cialis ads fit the show well, at least in reference to the wife who is cheating on her husband with a high schooler. A high schooler, come on. Her scenes with the high school boy are the only scenes on this show that makes we cringe. The high schooler is a little boy mentally not physically. They play up her affair in a manner that just makes me sick and this is probably one reason the "Family Value Adovocates" dislike this show. The affair is flaunted in your face nonstop. Has the writer heard of being discrete? The affair scenes are somewhat funny but in a creepy way. Otherwise, the show is good and I like it.

ABC is probably thrilled about this. Those ads were sold at up-front rates. Sponsors that will be fillng the void will have to pay current rates. And, with a top five show, those are a tad bit higher than the upfronts.

The alleged "American Family Association" is always starting a stink about some show or another. Personally, I don't believe they are "American" or "Family", or an "Association".

I just write to the sponsor who pulls out and tell them that I bought products from the new sponsor, the one that replaced them.

The protector from evil referred to is not the advertisers but the so-called American Family Association, which put the pressure on the advertisers.

And yes, the advertisers acted in what they considered to be their own self interest.

If you read the article, the doubling of ad rates may have had more impact than any pressure applied. As far as Lowes is concerned, they wouldn't have advertised to begin with, so you can't really credit any pressure on their decision.

economic extortion is a way of life these days in America.

The standard approach for a special-interest group which isn't getting its way is to threaten advertisers with a boycott. It happens in the area of race, gender, politics, sexual preference and religion/morality.

I personally despise all of these efforts, but if I have to endure them find this type of boycott less objectionable than many others.

YMMV.

Well sex sells whats new ..... ABC is laughing all the way to the bank.

They doubled the price of the pulled advertisers spot and have many other advertisers lined up for the ad spots.

I don't think that ABC has a major problem. Based on this excerpt, there are more of us (viewers) than there are of them (protesters/protectors).

'Desperate Housewives,' Cleaning Up

By Lisa de Moraes

Wednesday, October 20, 2004; Page C07

CBS bagged the most viewers last week, Fox snared the most young viewers, but ABC enjoyed the most water-cooler talk.

Here's a look at the week's ups and downs:

WINNERS

"Desperate Housewives." Against all odds, this serialized drama starring middle-aged women and airing on ABC remains the No. 1 new show of the season. Last week it copped nearly 21 million viewers -- its biggest haul since its unveiling. And though it aired opposite Game 4 of the American League playoffs, "Housewives" continued to score with men. It was the week's No. 2 series among 18-to-49-year-old guys, behind only "Monday Night Football," and beat every night of baseball on Fox.

Even with TiVo, I feel like I have to search long and hard to find ANYTHING I could watch with my kids during the week. Long gone are the shows like Happy Days, Home Improvement and the Cosby show. High-quality, highly-rated shows that you know will be clean before you start watching are extinct these days.

So, I, for one, am happy for any pressure put on the networks and program producers to create cleaner shows. Again, I wouldn't care but there aren't any clean shows on TV these days.

I've had TiVo so long, I forget what commercials are.

Even when I do catch the occassional commercial, I certainly don't associate the sponsor with the content of the show itself.

These people are generalizing from insufficient data.

PTC is nothing but a nuisance. sure they try to promote good family values, but if you did some digging on them and their Bozell Front man you would find lots of dirt.

Right now they are trying to get NBC to pony up Money, via the FCC for their airing of the Litte E. Interview where he said "Sh!t"

Sorry. Living in the Miami area sometimes makes one think that everyone everywhere speaks Spanish.

¿por que? = why? As in why do you object less to that type boycott?
