Does this mean that dialog is purposely turned down 4dB or am I misinterpreting what it means? This is the signal info from my Yamaha 663 bitstreaming Dolby True-HD.

I think it's called dialnorm. It is supposed to be correct with the rest of the channels when this is used in the stream. This is done at the authoring level.

So it's a setting done by the people doing the mastering and it's not a setting you can monkey with within the receiver's settings? I was just wondering what it meant and if you could adjust it. I'll have to google dialnorm and read up a little on it...

You know. I'm not sure I really understand it.


But often you will see a brief blurb about it on the display of the processor when you first switch to the source. I mean it was in use in regular old DD as well.
