I'm no expert by any means. But my wife and I both noticed tonight that the pq looked much better on the HD channels & SD channels including locals-which are usually pretty bad. We were flipping all around and felt it was a universal upgrade. Is that possible? I'm using the HD Tivo. Sd channels looked very good, because I usually think they're awful. They were almost DVD quality.

I had the same impression. The PQ does seem change day by day.

Funny how threads like this seem to pop up right after I experience major signal dropout issues on multiple 119 and 110 xps. It may be that for one reason or another my equipment is more sensitive than others', but it's no coincidence that I have these problems at the same time that D* tinkers.

I just wish they wouldn't tinker during primetime.

I agree with picture quality especially with the broadcast networks where the picture doesn't look as soft compared to last week. Maybe D* is not compressing them as much. Still a longshot away from the picture quality you see on DiscoveryHD & HDNet.

I flipped past the Millionaire Motor Homes on Discovery HDT last night and thought it looked particularly soft for that channel. Overall, I haven't seen any improvement lately, only more and more macroblocking on high-action sequences.

If it matters, I'm using an HTL-HD on a Sony 51WS510 using DVI.

HDNet looked bad last night. I saw pixelation quite a few times watching Smallville and during the commercials. Not to mention Haunted on right after it was not sharp at all, and was extremely grainy.

May be a coincidence for east coasters, but some of the network Digital stations from the Empire State Building went full power last night. D does take off air feeds for some of the networks.

Even if I was still watching "HDLight" I have to admit that last night while waiting for "Point Pleasent" on FOX-HD, I watched about an hour of "Bad Boys 2" on HBO-HD. I could not believe the quality I was seeing with "Bad Boys 2". I kept telling my friend it looked like we were watching demo material. Colors were popping and contrast was high. It could have been "HDLight" without major compression or passably full HD resolution with no or some compression. Or it could have been what DirecTV has been broadcasting on HBO-HD for some time (HDLight with lots of compression). Either way, I felt that the picture (and sound quality) was pretty outstanding. It would have been better if Bad Boys 2 was shown at it's original ratio of 2.35:1.

I don't know if this had anything to do with it however before I went to bed, I noticed that HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, HDNet Movies were all off the air or at least my receiver could not find the signal and that Universal HD had a very low signal. IT PROBABLY HAD TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT WE WERE GETTING LOTS OF RAIN AT THAT MOMENT). Then again, I was not sure if DirecTV was doing anything with their signals.

One show this week that I watched last night on my HD-Tivo was LOST. I was amazed at the clarity for film content and color/contrast was superb. This was on D* LA feed. I had been tinkering with advanced picture setup on the Sony 55XS955 so maybe I just nailed the optimal picture quality for my setup. But if things stay like this I am a happy camper!

George - Do you know which ones? I watched Friends at 11pm on WPIX with my wife, and it was considerably better than I have seen.

There's someone here who can measure the resolution and bandwidth that's being sent. Maybe he can ring in on what's really going on.

I watch the Science channel a lot and noticed Tuesday night that it looked better. I judge by the blocking around the corner bug it was way less than it had been in the last few months, I really had to look hard to see and blocking.

I haven't watched anything in HD since then so I'm not sure about them.

Ok - There's more to that , and I'm just not smart enough to figure it out. Is something going on? Seriously though, the SD looks like like a BIG improvement to me.
