Just replaced an ancient 12" JBL subwolfer, model X sub with a DefTech Prosub 1000 and I'm less than impressed. The room is approx. 4100 cubic feet and the old JBL would wake the dead, the DT sounds ok but the "omph ain't there no mo" From what I've read the DT is overpriced and under performing. I wanted to stay DT cause the rest of the speakers are DT. My budget is maxed out, though I could spend a few more $$ to get my boom back.

Would the Mirage S8 be a better way to go?

Yes the JBL still works, but it emits a loud pop when there is insufficient load on it.

Or should I work with tweaking the DT?

Can you return the def tech? Your sub doesn't have to match your main speakers and for the money you paid for that you can probably get a much better sub.
