I have both a 5040 and a 5504. My 5040 is one of the first made and has a much noisier fan than does the 5504. If you network the two units together and then view shows recorded on the 5504 from the 5040, commercial advance still works. Other than that, I can see no difference in the two units.

Difference Between 5040 And 5504
I am thinking about getting a second Replay for playback on a second TV (and kicking myself for not thinking about this sooner and getting in on the $29.95 deal). I currently have a 5040 and was wondering about the difference between the 5040 and 5504. I know the 5504 does not have the commercial advance which I love, but I am wondering if there are any other differences. Thanks.

It may be called something different but Commercial advance is still there in the 5504 - it just isn't automatic. When a commercial comes on press the arrow key to the right of the select button.
The fan noise issue with the 5000's is related to which version of the mainboard the RTV has. For non-refurbished units, it seems that the ones made in China were those with the earlier rev. board (constant speed fan) vs. the later, Malaysian mfg'd 5000's (and AFAIK all 5500's) have the newer boards with the temperature controlled fan. When it comes to refurbished units though, the country of manufacture (indicated on the S/N sticker) doesn't always accurately indicate which revision mainboard is inside the ReplayTV.
Check out l8er's website - www.grandallusion.com for some solutions to the "noisy" fan issue w/ the older 5000's - if you're bothered by it (I have two "old/noisy" 5040's and a "quiet" 5504 - while I can easily notice the noise level difference between the units, I don't personally consider the older units "noisy" - YMMV though)
