Digital Audio Troubleshooting - TV to Receiver

This post in slightly different language has been posted in the Yamaha RX-V3800 forum. I have a KDL series 65" Sony television. The audio is connected to my Yamaha 3800 receiver via a toslink optic cable. I'm running a 5.1 setup from the receiver. When I want to use the receiver for TV sound, I turn on the receiver and select the corresponding input fro the TV and lower the TV volume. Lately, what I see is that the sound will sound fine with sound in usually PCM/Sublogic mode. After about an hour +/-, the sound will fade and if it returns, only the center channel is working. All other speakers are either fully or almost fully quiet. Assuming the cable is fine, which is the more likely failure, the receiver or TV? Am I correct is assuming that output from the TV is probably okay merely because I have any sound at all and it's not distorted? I was thinking my next "elimination" step would be to move the receiver receptacle to another audo in digital and see if I experience the same issue. Is that the most logical way of progressing. All other sound from the CD (also toslink) and HDMI from the BR player all seem fine. Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

@TLoewenberg I have old Integra gear with my new 4k tv and use optical. I have never heard of sound fading in and out, but I would try a new optical cable and port. I know optical cables can be damaged easily, process of elimination i think.

Thanks. I just moved to an unused input port and it sounds "the way it should." Bright light coming out of the cable at both ends. If the receiver, it's the first issue I've ever seen. The "sound fading" was more of a shot in the dark than anything realistic. The ticket to a new TV tugging..... I think I'll buy a new cable as well even though a bear to replace because of the rat's nest behind a damn entertainment center.

After a few days of moderate use, I'm starting to see the same audio phenomena with the toslink cable connected to an unused optical digital input port. My next step will be to try a newly acquired optical cable. If I see the issue again, I have a dilemma, which is trying to determine what is the best way to connect audio only from the TV to the receiver. For audio jacks, I have available the MD/Tape R&L and a number of audio R&L in the video input section of the receiver. So, if I connect only auto to the DTV/CBL jacks, will the receiver process only the audio if there's no video? There are no dedicated analog TV in jacks. I'm resorting to this because after looking at the service manual, my guess is that a tech would recommend replacing the main circuit board. Even though I paid more that $1000 for the receiver, I expect that replacing that board wouldn't be cost effective at this point. Thoughts?
