How do I know if a sound card has digital in that will connect from the digital out on my DVD ROM player?

I'm having a hard time deciding on an audio card because of a few things.

1. The FAQ seems out of date

2. Everyone just seems to argue in threads about jitter, etc.. etc...

3. The M Audio 2496 seems to be "the card", but in reading a review I thought for sure it said it didn't have a digital input on it to connect to the CD/DVD ROM drive

4. Some love SB, some don't. SB Live 5.1 seems to be a good card at a good price ($37 at newegg for OEM)

5. I'm not sure how to tell if this connection exists on a card, and if there is if I need to buy a cable at the same time!

The sound will get to your card via IDE. No physical connection from the DVD is necessary. Drew

Will it be digital or analog? I'm guessing A as it has to make the move from the player to the MB to the card, and it starts out as A.

What's the point of using digital out from the sound card then? How would you use the digial out on the ROM drive with this card?
