Went shopping for Monster Cables wires at BestBuy yesterday, the salesman suggested just buy one good 129.00 MC optical cable and no need to hook up the six 5.1 analog cables from dvd to receiver, it will switch to analog with just that one optical cable. He also stated that's how his personal home system set up is without all the excess wires bunching up behind his system. I tried it last night but can't seem to get the six channel mode going, no sound coming out playing 5.1 dvds.

Too good to be true what the BB guy said?

A digital cable connecting your DVD player's output (whether it be the coaxial or optical digital output) to your receivers digital input will indeed provide you with 5.1 sound.

Make sure you're using the right input on your receiver and you have turned on digital/bitstream output in your DVD player's menu.

It might help if you post the model of receiver and DVD player you're using.

$129? Return that cable and buy an AR $20 cable. You won't notice a difference.

If you are trying to get DVD-Audio or SACD from your DVD player to your receiver, you have to use the analog cables.

I don't know if this should be a new thread, but is there an advantage to digital optical vs digital coaxial? The salesman from an independent store in my city told me the coaxial is better, but in theory (at least in my mind) the optical should be better (minutely faster traveling information). My Integra manual says they both deliver the same quality.

My manual also says for CD listening, plug in not only the digital, but also the typical red/white stereo wires to accomodate for some analog signals. I've only had the/a system for a couple weeks, so I don't know how accurate that is.

It won't, if you are trying to get DVD-Audio or SACD from your DVD player to your receiver.

For those you have to use the analog cables.

Guys, I'm using the HK525 and a 2 years old Toshiba 5800 dvd player with all up to date inputs and outputs. I only use this for watching dvd only, no cd or vcr playing because I have a separate stsem for that. Most dvd I watch are mostly 5.1 sound, hardly DTS coded. I just wanted to know will one optical or coaxial cable handle the 6 channel sound instead of hooking up the six RCA cable like the BB guy said? I got both answers from this site.

Thanks anyway.

Your Integra manual is correct. Coax is susceptible to a ground loop and optical can be damaged more easily. Choose the lesser of two evils for your application...
