I have seen the specs for a high end theater that includes a Digital Projection pj at around $150k with its own projection room, heavy duty a/c to keep it cool etc.

What kind of performance can be expected from this type of projector on a 15' wide screen? Why this and not a Qualia, HD2K etc?

The brightness that meets theater standards for an 25 meter screen would be more than a little over kill for a 15 foot screen. Yes resolution is 2048 X 1080.

The question I would ask is where are you going to get the source material to run on such a system? Are you going to talk to George Lucas directly :)

what exacly is your question? is it "why can LCOS deliver a full HD 3 chip machine for a fraction of the price of DLP?"

The answer might be "we're still waiting for DLP to deliver a full HD 3 chipper for a consumer" or even a 1 chipper for that matter

The DPI is8 would do just fine. It has 2048x1080 with upto 8000 ANSI lumens but you can turn down the brightness significantly so that it is optimal for your screen size.

For $150k, you'd need to watch 15,000 movies to just break even (assuming $10 a movie ticket).

Wow. Scary.

yes but at 15,001 movies it's really starting to pay off ;)

That should be sometime in the year 2160, and by then $150,000 may look like pocket change. I expect something better to be out by then ;)

I guess my question really was, whats the pint of having 10k ansi lumens and ultra high resolution when source material is not there and just the sheer overkill of this thing.

I do think that there is a huge amount of EGO, mines bigger, in this theater.

Oh well, I can't wait to see the finished product.

Answer: This is a commercial projector not consumer

If someone has this in their HOME theater they obiously have lots of money and the salesman got his way (and commission)

Well, I think there are things to be said for this unit if you have the money. It probably will have better blacks and CR than a Qualia, can light up a screen that size maintaining that high CR, have enough light to keep it bright ( maybe a little ambient light being OK) and it could also be used in an install of say18' to 20' wide like some want. It really has no more resolution than a Qualia for HD so it isn't overkill there.

There are things this can do that ,realistically , a Qualia can't. The thing about "mine is bigger" is no different than yachts, homes or sports cars.By almost everyones standards the amounts are obscene but to be sure this isn't true for everyone. If one has the money ,why not, would be my question?

Thanks Art, great answer. I wasn't sure about the performance of this pj compared to the Q. Now I have some frame of reference. BTW, after some actual looking (damn memory) the screen is at least 18' wide.

In this particular case, the money is definately not an issue, so you are right, why not.

Which projector are you actually talking about? We know it is from DPI but what is the model number?

I guess they do have 2 new digital cinema products (8-2k and the 15-2k) that are also full HD
