Does this disc (or the AVIA) have seperate test signals for the back left and back right surround channels? I have the Sound & Vision disc and it outputs a simultaneous signal for both surround back channels. I need a test disc that has the seperate test signals.

Thanks.

I don't think this is possible as of yet because there are no 7.1 discrete formats to encode the two seperate backs with. The best we have is 6.1 so the back surrounds are matrixed sound, and can't be given their own signal.

This is correct. The rear channels in a 7.1 system recieve a mono signal that is split between the two channels. DPL IIx can process this signal and split it up so each speaker gets a "stereo" signal. Not sure if this will work well with the test disk though. I only have 5.1 system

If a receiver can have a built in signal that goes seperately to each back surround channel, then there has got to be a external disc that does the same. How then can you calibrate each speaker correctly if they are both receiving a signal at the same time.

Not necessarily because the signal built to go to the back surround channel from the receiver, although "separate", is still composed from information from other channels. So the back left channel will get info from the surround left and some from the surround right as well as any back encoding. Maybe even the front channels depending on the decoding algorithm. So if there is only a back signal being sent from the disc, and no other information, both the back channels will sound exactly the same as you have been experiencing. The only way to make them sound different is send information to the other channels which is worse for calibrating, and they will still both be on.

Yes.

DVE gives individual test tones to check each speaker individually in a 5.1 or 6.1 system. It gives you a lot more on other tests as well but that answers your question without adding confusion.

I do not use the older test disk, AVIA, but I would be very surprised if it did not also at least provide Dolby 5.1 with individual tests for left surround and again for right surround.

No. DVE does not send a test tone to individual surround back channels in a 7.1 configuration.

Because it is encoded in 6.1, the test signal is sent to both back surrounds simultaneously in a 7.1 setup, rendering it useless for setting individual back speaker levels.

I don't have an answer for Avia.
