It appears that copies of this highly anticipated disk are finally arriving. Any plasma owners get a copy yet? I'm very interested in knowing if there are any specific test patterns that facilitate the setting of contrast on plasma displays. If so, how well does it/they work? I have Avia, but it is not very useful for setting contrast.

The current VE has a couple of good patterns for setting plasma contrast. I have posted the details in other threads, but can't recall exactly when. Try searching on Snell or Wilcox. You might find it.

Jim,

I have seen your posts regarding the subject, but I've been waiting to see how the new DVE turns out before spending $70 on the now discontinued original VE DVD. I was hoping that the new DVE would have test patterns specifically designed for digital displays (plasma, LCD, DLP).

I too have been wondering this. I've been following the DVE thread in the DVD Forum, but no one has stepped up and said they've calibrated with it. I may end up using Rich's Steaming Rat method, although I'm not sure I want to see steaming rats in HD. ;)

Be aware of the DVE version you pick up. I grabbed a copy @ Fry's and noticed that it said "NTSC" version. Looked on the back and it mentioned no less than THREE versions: "NTSC", "PAL", and "HDTV". I would imagine the one most folks 'round here want is the "HDTV" version. Alas, Fry's only had the "NTSC" version.

Posted this in the Fry's DVE thread as well...

the Digital Video Essentials DVD you want for the USA says 'NTSC Component' on the case: it comes with the color filter and a user guide

a recent issue of Widescreen Review (by Joe Kane: issue 76 Sep 03 pg 90) has an article on how to use it's test patterns

there are also two versions of DVE in D-VHS tape format: 720p and 1080i: I got the 1080i version: some have commented that the test patterns on the D-VHS tape do not stay up long enough: but it is most impressive:

at the beginning are some shots of the space shuttle (NASA Montage) that are really good

DVE has setup and test patterns that covers audio and video

and... the FBI warning is at the END of the DVD- a nice touch!

Looks like Joe Kane is going to be in So.Calif. in a few months. After I "Play" with the new version, it would be interesting to see what I can learn from him.
