I have both HD DVD and Blu-Ray titles and would like to use it on my HTPC.

What will the best player for me be?

PowerDVD 7 seems to be a good player since it supports both HD DVD and Blu-ray, but my concern is, will it support newer Blu-Ray titles or do I need to have PowerDVD 8 also?

Or if PowerDVD 7 won't support new discs, will AnyDVD then the problemsolver?

I used PowerDVD 7 for quite a while until I recently encountered an issue when trying to play back some of the latest BD ripped movies. I was origiunally using PDVD 7 because it was the only program that allowed me to play back movies ripped to folders on my HTPC. PDVD 8 only allows you to play back rips as iso's mounted in a virtual drive. PDVD 7 also does this but it didn't like some of the newest BD titles (e.g. The Dark Knight and several others I've tried).

After doing some reading on the Slysoft forum, it appeared that using PDVD 8 with iso's would work so I bit the bullet and purchased an upgrade to PDVD 8 Ultra from Cyberlink for about $45. Considering I only paid $10 for PDVD 7 Ultra on ebay it wasn't such a bad deal. The good news is that I was able to install both versions on my HTPC with no problems other than both programs wanting to open simultaneously when I mount an image. The problematic iso's now work fine with PDVD 8 and I can still play my old file rips using PDVD 7.

One other reason for upgrading to PDVD 8 Ultra is that it supports the latest HD audio formats. I recently bought an Onkyo Pro PR-SC885 preamp/processor that decodes these formats and supports HDMI 1.3. I'm still waiting for the dust to settle on the Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3 sound card issue so I can add one to my HTPC for bitstreaming of HD audio with 24fps playback. Ripping my Blu-Ray movies to iso's retains the HD audio soundtracks, which is another reason for upgrading to PDVD 8.
