After reading about the new Shrek going to DVD directly from the digital files and remembering that Toy Story/Toy Story 2 did the same, I thought of a question. Film projects are shot at 24 fps which is why we need 3:2 and 2:3 to get the proper progressive output on our DVD players.

What about these direct to DVD releases? It seems to me that they could output anything they wanted, so they could for instance output 2 fields of each image for a solid frame rate of 30 fps in progressive without having to worry about 3:2 pulldown, etc. Or do they just output with 3:2 pulldown because the files are already setup that way?

Any ideas?
