I have an extra DirecTV HR-10 receiver that I would like to use in my home office and watch TV on a DELL 2007FP monitor. The monitor has standard VGA and DVI inputs. Not terribly concerned about HD right now even though the DirecTV receiver is a high def one. I just want the ability to watch TV while I'm working or relaxing in my home office.

What do I need to make this happen? Can I connect directly to my DELL monitor? Do I need to go through a computer's graphic card? ... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated before I go out and buy a small LCD TV for the home office.

Thanks in advance.

Try it out and see. You should be able to connect directly to the monitor. The DVR should have come with a HDMI > DVI cable, so you should be good to go. Then run your optical audio or composite audio cables to your PC or sound system.

BTW, you should have composite and s-video inputs on that monitor too if needed, but DVI should be the best way.

So, short of buying a new LCD TV, there must be something on the market that can make this work.

It is not a matter of saving money, but rather a matter of saving desk space. Don't want 2 units on my desk..

Did you try it out and it wouldn't work? Like I said, you can use composite or s-video if needed.

It would allow them to watch tv. That's what good it would do. No one said s-vid would carry HD - and it looks like that would be an acceptable solution:

I would still try out the HDMI > DVI cable just to make sure it won't work. Won't take but a minute to try.

Turns out my DELL 2007FP has a Composite Video and S-Video input. Connected S-Video straight to my DirecTV receiver and it worked beautifully. Not top notch quality but it's serving its purpose. I had an old SD DirecTV receiver that I'm using so not to sacrifice a full HD receiver.

Just out of curiosity I'm going to hook up an HR-20 to the 2007FP through an HDMI>DVI cable and report back this weekend. Just need to find the HDMI>DVI cable. I know it came with the receiver.

Excellent. Let us know if the HDMI>DVI cable works or not.
