Take this for what it's worth, I contacted Dtv to ask what happens to the current STBs (like the DCT-100) when DVIor HDMI comes along? Seeing as how Dtv (and E*) had announced that they were on board with making their new STB's with it. So here's the response I got back.
Quote:
Thank you for your patience. I've researched your concern and would like to assure you that the DVI technology will not make previously

manufactured high definition DIRECTV receivers obsolete. This new

technology offers additional features that might enhance the DIRECTV

viewing experience. Rest assured that we plan to continue providing

service and support to owners of existing HDTV receivers.
So at least it sounds positive, who knows..

This response doesn't clarify anything. Here's another interpretation:

"Thank you for your patience. I've researched your concern and would like to assure you that the DVI technology will not make previously

manufactured high definition DIRECTV receivers obsolete."

-The old receivers will still decode the DirecTV feed, like any other receiver today. The DVI output on new boxes doesn't change that. It can't.

"This new technology offers additional features that might enhance the DIRECTV viewing experience."

-i.e., allowing you to watch channels in full high definition because of the new digital output annd legislation.

"Rest assured that we plan to continue providing service and support to owners of existing HDTV receivers."

-we will be happy to provide you support and service, but that doesn't guarantee it will be at full resolution.
