It does go to 119 and it wont give them any extra capacity there, it will just replace the bird thats already there thats not putting out much power. That way they wont have to worry about putting all the new locals slated to go there and have only marginal signal strengths to some of those subs.

Isn't this their second spot beam satellite? Or does that launch later in the year?


If so, it could free up capacity by doing locals more efficiently.


How about using spot beam to do HBO-HD-East and HBO-HD-West, with the Mississippi river as the cutoff. :)

DirecTV-5 is just a CONUS beam satellite. It will provide the long-needed power boost to the transponders broadcasting at 119. It has been reported that the next DirecTV spot beam satellite should launch by 4th quarter 2003 known as the DirecTV-7S.
