Disappointing movies you wanted to like

I was thinking last night about movies that had a redeeming quality somewhere but simply sucked at others. Like great acting, but bad special effects and editing. So, my question is, what movies did you want to like because it excelled in one area but was ruined by other major weaknesses? (Matrix doesn't count) a good example would be Sky Captain. Great visuals and idea, but lame story, weak acting, PG rating and soft glow around actors to hide the blue screen cropping was just a bad move. My wife won't even let me buy the DVD. And Lucas films don't count either.

My movie is

House Of The Dead. I thought it had cool visuals, camera work, creative angles and POV, but story, acting, editing, basically everything else was pretty bad.

Hate to say it, but for me it's The Abyss. I loved most of it, but the ending of the theatrical release (only one I saw) really killed it for me.

ray, aviator, incredibles, and spiderman 2.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The Forgotten.

The Village.

The Grudge.

Boogeyman.

Cold Creek Manor.

Saw.

Identity.

Jeepers Creepers.

Secret Window.

Wes Craven presents They.

Dawn of the Dead.

Darkness Falls.

ALL had potential, started off well, but turned into disappointment.

The Village

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

The Stepford Wives

The Forgotten

Spiderman (part 1)

All of these I really tried to like, but something about them was ruined.

biggest disapointment I've had in a while was Once upon a time in mexico.

I was really hoping it would be more " Desporado-ish " and having cheech and that tatoo'd guy in it playing different characters than they played in the first one was a real bummer for me.
Once upon a time in Mexico was a let down, but I still loved depp in it.

The new star wars movies all are let downs.

Alexander

Hulk

Godzilla

Skulls 2 and 3

I'll think of some more.

Now, I know some movies are let downs, because you wanted one thing to happen, but something else did. But, I'm referring more to movies that had some serious issues that almost makes them B movies instead. The question was hard to condense into a few words of the title but I'm looking more for movies that have major flaws in them that prevents them from being worthy of your approval. Spider Man 2 simply does not fall into this realm. There is nothing wrong with Spiderman, acting is good, story is good, action is good, editing and special affects are good, etc. That's also why I said no George Lucas films, I know SW has a lot of fans who want perfection every episode.

I think mostly I'm looking for movies that stunk but had some good points to them that made you not like the movie, even tho the good points made you want to. Does that make sense?
"Waterworld."

This was a movie with some promise: an interesting concept, a huge budget to realize the concept, and some reasonable acting talent.* But too much of the dialogue was just plain stupid, and the whole thing seemed to be played for laughs by some of the participants. Disappointing.

*Costner can act. See, for example, "The Untouchables" or "Field of Dreams." Hopper can act. See, for example, "Blue Velvet" or "Apocalypse Now."

LOL! That's exactly what I thought when I saw it!
Queen of the Damned...

Not a good movie.
"I Robot" and "The Hulk." What WERE they thinking with the cgi in those movies?

htomei
iRobot was simply awesome. It is clearly reference quality. The faces are a bit odd on the robots and movements aren't fluid, but they look real, very well done.

As for Kosner, I should of had a disclaimer that his movies don't count because there isn't much in them that people want to like :) Waterworld wasn't as horrible as Mailman, or Postal Guy, whatever that movie was, haha.
The Village. What a waste of time.

God I wanted to like this movie. As a designer, I was extremely excited about the original stills, and the incredible trailer. Poor acting, a weak script, and the oddest last minute plot additions just ruined the film for me.

Now you're being rather arbitrary, even though it is your thread. Though Spider-Man 2 was in the main pretty good- I suppose- it was one I was a bit disappointed in. The performances were just not really there, even the usually always reliable Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco was positively cringe-inducing. And I wanted to like it; I loved the poster art with Kirsten hanging on to Spidey.

You're asking "what you wanted to like and didn't" and then disqualifying a title because you didn't approve of the opinion.

I really wanted to like Donnie Darko and the second Harry Potter film, and years back, Pulp Fiction.

Well, I can see what you're saying, though I may not be articulate enough to find the words to present the question clear enough. I'm not really looking for movies that were let downs from a satisfaction stand point as much as I am from a technical stand point. Bad editing is not subjective. Really bad acting isn't either as are bad special effects like in that new movie with the thorns around the movie title (can't think of the name, but the big wave coming into the city is soooo obviously fake)

I guess it is all subjective in a way, but I wasn't expecting to see movies listed that I considered to be top notch I guess.
