Dish 5000 users: what packages do you subscribe to?

589 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Joe Q
Another thread raised the topic of what Dish 5000 users subscribe to. Just HBO/SHO? Or do you get other packages (top 50-150) from Dish? This might give us an idea of how much is really at stake for Dish in turning off the 5000's HDTV capability.

By full HD package, I mean ESPN/HDNET/HDNET movies/DiscoveryHD. Also, throw CBS HD into that if you get it. Obviously, you would only get the full HD package if you have a 6000 (or 811) since 5000 does not get those 8psk signals.

These polls are never perfect, since you can only vote for one item. I would say vote HD + top 50
you forgat americas everything pac :) which is what i have plus some foreign channels ....

I guess HD+Top150 is for you then:)
I voted FULL but I do have 2 5000/HD mod rigs in adition to my 6000.

CBSHD comes from OTA for me.
AT100 + HD + HBO + Showtime + Starz on 5000 w/ mod, 6000, 811, and 301. Waiting to locate a 921!
Hmmm. Kind of early to tell with only 19 responses right now, but voting so far has been consistent at 1/2 the users subscribing only to basic HD (HBO/SHO or HD package). I would dare to say that places 5000 owners into a low $ per subscriber category. This surprises me.
About 40 votes now, and it continues the trend of less than 1/2 of the users subscribing to anything more than HD materials. While I had long suspected something like this, I had hoped it was not true since it implies less leverage for the 5000 crowd. I have now gotten 3 different emails from 3 different Dish executives on the 5000 topic, all saying in essence they have not decided what to offer us yet. I personally would agree to sign up for Top 100 package if they did a great deal on the 921. Otherwise, I drop dish and go with Comcast, since their HD service is about as good as Dish's, and the Motorola 6208 is (hopefully) coming soon.

I'm part of the ala carte HBO/SHO-only group, for their HD channels plus CBS-HD from NY. I get my LA-local DTV channels off-air, and the rest of my SD packages (as well as all waivered east/west networks) from DirecTV.

However I think you might be a bit overly optimistic regarding the Motorola DCT-6200/6208 being available from Comcast in southern California. I was on the phone to Comcast sales three times today (just in case it was a matter of reaching the right sales rep to finally get the answer I was looking for) but they all spouted the same mantra: nothing but 5100 available in southern California. No 6200/6208 anytime in the near future, until they "convert their system to be digital" (whatever that means).

So while the 6200 promises legalized 1394 recording by April (maybe), this is clearly for selected other Comcast areas... but not for the country's largest population center.

Yes, this poll results are interesting but I also suspect it is very biased because the poll is in the recorder forum.

If I did not have a D-VHS,HD PC card or a 5000, I would never be paying attention to this forum.

Since the 5000 allows one to record,I wonder what the results would like like if you replaced 6000 (or now the 811) for 5000 in the poll question?

I bet it would be competely different ie. the majority would be subscribing to the whole shebang.

I dont understand what you mean, Joe. The whole point of this poll was to find out what level of programming people that own a 5000/mod combo might be subscribing to. Whether they have that combo in addition to other receivers or the combo alone.

It doesnt make any difference what subs that dont own the 5000/mod combo may or may not be subscibing to.

In other words, trying to get a small idea as to whether people that have the combo are some of E* best customers from a monthly revenue standpoint. Or if they're not, because they dont sub to a whole heck of alot of programing outside of HBO/SHO.

I was merely pondering 2 questions.

What would these results look like for non 5000 owners but who did have an HD receiver like the 6000.

Since this poll is in the recorder forum that only a certain set of folks subsrcibe to, what would the results look like in a more general forum.

Well one thing's for sure. A heck of alot less than 47% of respondents will say that they sub to HBO and/or SHO only.

I would guess the percentage that say they sub to HBO and/or SHO only, if you take the 5000/mod out of the equation, would be in the single digits.

Good guess.
