Dish 6000 16:9 SD output for HD channels??

359 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Vance45
I need to hook up a Dish 6000 to a 16:9 Toshiba SDTV and I would like to know how HD channels(HBO-HD) are sent out when using s-video. Will the s-video output be similar to an anamorphic dvd or will it be letterboxed. I would like to leave the TV in full 16:9 mode.

Thanks,

Vance

HD is letterboxed on the 6000 when viewed via S-video.. If you have a 16x9 TV you can try one of the wide modes to blow up the picture to fill the screen. I use this when I tape HD programs on my S-VHS VCR. If the VCR had component output and its own line doubler, it could be used to generate an anamorphic picture for viewing on 16x9.. do any VCRs come with component out/in?
would that work? I'm assuming you mean to leave the 6000 in hd mode, and use the component outputs to connect to the vcr. I don't see how this could work. And I also have never heard of a vcr with component video connections. But then again, what do I know?

It's not letterboxed if you set it to a 16x9 TV.

The S-video is only active when in 480i mode. It will downconvert and HS signal in that mode.

The Component output is only active when in 1080i mode. It will upconvert any 480i sognal in that mode.

Basically, if you want to record to VCR, you need to swicth it to 480i mode and it will still record widescreen but in SD.

Brian,

If Dish 6000 is set for 16:9 tv and tuned to HBO-HD, 480i from s-video out will look normal, similar to and anamorphic dvd, with my 16:9 sdtv set to FULL mode?

I really need to know before I make the purchase.

Thanks,

Vance
