Dish 6000 - can I use OTA without Dish?

738 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  rickforrest
I have a Dish 6000 in my home, to go along with my Dishplayer. But I only have one cable coming from my dish. I'll be moving in a month, and when I do, I'll setup a 2nd dish. Until then, I'd like to use the OTA portion of the 6000 (and yes, I have the module installed).

Anyway, as long as I have the cable from my dish going into the 6000, and my antenna going into the OTA module, everything is fine. I can't watch Dish, because the receiver isn't on my account, but I can watch OTA HDTV.

But when I remove the dish cable, I get the "acquiring signal" screen. I can make it go away by going into the setup menu. But that's the only place I can go. And I can't watch OTA tv, obviously.

Ideas?

Hookup at least one LNB to a Dish signal and you'll be fine, even if you aren't currently subscribed.

Thanks, but as I said, I want to avoid this. I currently don't have a 2nd cable from my dish to this room, and I don't want to run one, since I'm moving.

Any way to get past the acuiring signal screen?
6000 receiver must see a signal from the 148 or 61.5 signal to get OTA DTV... No way around it.

Or, in my case, 119.
You're getting all kinds of answers arent you rick? Except one that gives you what you're looking for! ;)

I dunno the answer either. If anyone has ever figured out a way to get the OTA module to work without a sat signal, I've never seen it mentioned even though it's been asked a number of times.
I don't know if this will work or not, but I think I have noticed that if my reciever is on the "local DTV" favorites (which contains only local OTA channels), I don't get the "searching for sat signal" when I turn the box on. I don't know if that is a solution or not, and haven't experimented much, but it might be something to try.

So, you're suggesting to install

1 diplexor at the dish/lnb, with the two outputs of the dual lnb pointed at 119 going into the diplexor, and the output connected to the cable going into the house.

and 1 diplexor at the two receivers?

I thought diplexor's were only for combining satellite at (cable or OTA). Can you really use them to combine two satellite signals?

Alternatively, I have a video splitter laying around. Could I connect that at the two receivers? Would that damage the lnb's or the receivers?

Are you saying both the 6000 and the Dishplayer are in the same room, but with only one coax coming in? I thought maybe they were in diff rooms altogether. If they're in the same room then yeah, you could simply use a splitter, 2 ghz one thats designed for DBS which you can pick up about anywhere that has splitters and just do it that way.

Normally that wouldnt be very slick if you wanted to use both to still watch Dish because they'd both have to tune to channels on the same sat and channels both on the same +/- polarity. But if it's just to feed the 6000 a simple satellite signal for the sake of using the OTA mod, it'll work.
Got the splitter at Walmart tonight. Just hooked it up and it works great.

And even better - the local CBS affiliate started broadcasting in digital this week.

Thanks everybody.
