Question...

If I purchase the Dish 6000 HD Receiver and 8VSB tuner (with no programming commitment)but want to wait to add Dish programming until a later date, can I use the receiver now strictly as a decoder to receive the local OTA HD signals that I can pick up with an antenna? I need to know this before I purchase the receiver.

My understanding is that the 8VSB won't work unless you have a satellite signal, so not only do you need to subscribe, you may have trouble receiving local channels if it's stormy and your dish can't see the satellite.

Your understanding is wrong. You don't need to subscribe to receive a signal from the satellite, so you don't need to subscribe to get OTA. I'm not sure whether or not loss of the satellite signal will cause you to lose OTA reception. Just from my own experience with the bugs in the 6000's software, I'm led to believe it is only a problem when you switch channels, not when you're continuously viewing a single OTA channel.

You're right (at least according to this link below). You need to lock on to a satellite, but you don't need to subscribe. One note however is that you need to subscribe if you want software updates. Check out this link for more info:

Sorry for the confusion, my recollection was from prior posts here in this forum about 7 months ago, where they were complaining about this requirement.

Nope. You do not need to subscribe to get the software updates. Only requirement is to have a dish pointed at one of the birds.
