We purchased and installed a eliptical dish (RCA) in anticipation of using it for direct-tv HDTV. We have decided to convert to tbe Dish Network and purchase the model 6000. Can the RCA dish be used with this system or is it necessary to purchase their dish for HDTV. Thanks in advance.

Short answer.

No

the small dishes (tall and thin) are compatible with either system dish and directv while the short and wide ones are only compatible with its specific system dish OR direct but not both.

Yes you can. You will not be able to use the multiswitch that came with the DirecTV dish. You wil need to purchase a Dish multiswitch. You will also need to purchase a special "Sat-C" kit if you want to receive Dish programming from the 110 satellite. You will still need a second 18" dish pointed at the 61.5 or the 148 satellite to receive HD content. One benefit of using the DirecTV 24" dish is that you can receive DirecTV programming from the 101 satellite. Many on this forum have used this setup to receive the DirecTV sports packages.

A "Sat-C" kit has extra electronics to trick the receiver into thinking the channels are coming from a different transponder. It will only work with DirecTV. Just move the 101 LNB into the 110 slot. IIRC it may need a spacer to lower it slightly. If I'm wrong someone will correct me on this.
