I have just finished a update on my Bitrate spread for Dish Network on my webspace, every Dish channel's bitrate is down except one

no channels are at 18 Mbps video like HDNet and Equator were just back in june

Guytv/Gallery are just pathetic

they are 1280x1080i and still get the 9 Mbps treatment

HBO/Showtime border on pathetic, Showtime has so many errors it takes me usually a average of 5 caps of a movie to finally get a perfect copy to archive

my favorite show on Hdnet (Bikini Destinations) has been showing lots of macroblocking lately on the re-runs

Dish is most certainly taking HDTV bitrates down again, only one channel is were is was just 2 months back, EVERY channel(except Discovery) is lower per my new bitrates

Espn has been lowered drastically and some others by over 2 Mbps, ESPN sportscenter has been looking quite fuzzy on my Mits 9" CRT

the current winners are HDnet Moives, Ultra and Monsters, they are wonderful and show it when watching them, Discovery also appears to be a shade better lately

Here is from May 2005:

Can't go to Comcast. They aren't in my area. No decent cable provider is in my area. What should I do?

D*'s current numbers according to Cheezmo

ESPN-HD 16.0 (720p)

FOX-HD 15.0 (720p)

ABC-HD 14 (720p)

HDnet 15.2-12.5 (1920x1080)

DiscHD 14.9 (1280x1080)

NBC-HD 14 (1280x1080)

CBS-HD 13.2 (1280x1080)

UniHD 11.1 (1280x1080)

HBO 8.5-10 (1280x1080)

SHO-HD 7.8-9.6 (1280x1080)

Hdnet Movies 7.7-8.5 (1280x1080)

95 (Fox sports) is still in the good range though.

I fully expected this from dish though.... dbs is more concerned about number of channels vs PQ. This will make my decision that much harder to leave my cable co if they keep on providing all my HD channels full bw. With dish downrezzing HD who would have thought cable (yes i know not all cable companies are full bw but most are) would be the PQ HD leader?

I love this. Now everyone who had no problem with E*'s PQ will now complain because of numbers???

That's good to hear, I have Dish being installed next monday, looks like it might be better than I had counted on. :)

Gary, over what time period do you average? I thought Dish claimed some time back that they were testing variable bitrate compression/encoding ....

I have noticed more errors on HDnet and TNT the past few weeks. Also, ESPNHD just hasnt seemed as sharp, especially with fast motion. I noticed between May and August, its average has dropped 4 mbps.

I might just have to try comcast for a month and see the difference for my self...

If we keep talking about HD-Lite, Comast and other cable companies may just catch up and start to downrezz soon, except that historically they are slow to react on anything high-tech.

Downrezz IS more high-tech than pass-through, isn't it?

IMO D* set a precenence that E* followed when people didnt complain as much as expected.

I dont see cable doing this (atleast not initially) as generally they dont have that many channels to broadcast yet (and wont need to find as much bw to broadcast stuff... the advantage of being able to concentrate on one market). I would not be suprised at all to see cable stay at full bw/rex (overall) because its something they are going to be able to market.... and they will market it alot if dbs PW doesnt improve.

I ordered a 2 minute egg today and they cooked it 119.9539203 seconds. My friend tells me the diner up the street does a better job, but mentioned it is possible I might get one in 120.0028910 seconds. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO?!!!

Unfortunately, the Comcast I get in my area already does downrezz HBO-HD if my comparison with DIRECTV is right (I have both), so I had thought of switching to Dish as an alternative. I'm not sure that would help me a whole lot though (other than HDNet Movies compared to DIRECTV and getting some new things).

Comcast is already toying with rate-shaping equipment in SF, so down-rezzing is most likely in the future.

Really? What channels? I haven't noticed any quality changes lately.

If you recall back during the NBA playoffs when KQED-HD went on the air at 8PM the picture on KGO got very pixelated and froze images...that was Comcast playing with the rate-shaping...KGO-HD and KQED-HD share the same 6 Mhz 256 QAM channel. I don't know what the status is now, but when I last talked to the folks at KGO they indicated that they requested Comcast stop doing whatever they were doing and the picture was fine after that. KGO indicated that they have had issues with Comcast in the past toying with BW and resolution.
