I was trying to demo my subwoofer today and put on Tron Legacy and Avengers Endgame on Disney+ through my PS5. It was sounding pretty bad...there was no clarity on the high end and the low end seemed clipped, very little subwoofer output. I never remembered it sounding this bad so I switched over to my Roku and it was a night and day difference. The audio as much clearer and the LFE was great.

Now I'm wondering is this a known issue with Disney+ or do I have some messed up PS5 settings somewhere? Next step for me is to do a similar test with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Disney plus audio is horrible. This is known. Disney is neutering the bass in a big way in their movies and then thru steaming as well.

It sounded great with Disney+ on the Roku. The issue seems to be with the app only on PS5.

Sounds to me there are mis-configuration in both PS5 and your AVR.
For PS5, see if you can configure it to bitstream app audios which is DD+ for all streaming apps. It sounds like you are only getting PCM 2.0 out of the apps. Or you are using a connection between PS5 and AVR that is incapable of sending DD+.

For AVR, even if you only getting PCM 2.0, you can still re-direct LFE to the subwoofer if you set ALL your speakers to small. It sounds like you either didn't set fronts to small or you are using a direct/pure mode that prevented bass management.

All streaming services send out DD+ audio and hence should sound exactly the same regardless of the device you use. The differences are in configurations, settings and how to connect them.

I have all the speakers small and am definitely getting a little out of the sub but the sound just isn't close to the same quality as the roku. I'll check the PS5 settings, thanks.

Yeah... Seems that way. HBO max has stopped working on the roku, it's been giving me problems too. Maybe I should just try a Chromecast.
You would think that these app developers would give you the best performance and stability they could. (They Don't) Glad I don't use them. Playstations would be the most problematic, as they use their own OS.

So the Hdmi output type on the ps5 was set to "TV". I changed it to "AVR" and told it to output 5.1 audio. There is another option for audio format as well, which is "Linear PCM", "Dolby", or "DTS". Initial research is that I could leave this at linear pcm? I think it was outputting 2.0 audio because it was set to TV output but there isn't any explanation in the menus.

Can't try it out tonight as the kids are asleep but I'll try tomorrow.

Sounds like the Xbox audio options.....I would set it to DTS or Dolby since you are streaming. You will have to experiment with Linear PCM...some AVRs decode it properly, some dont.

To be honest, I don't think consoles are any good for movies except if you can't afford a decent streamer and BD player. Quality difference is noticeable when you play back the same content and compare devices side by side.
