I am a little confused by this I have a 1080p display, (HDMI OUT)with a optical (audio)output to an amp outputting 5.1 to the speakers. The "Guides" say you should leave this enabled unless you are having problems.

How do you know you are putting out 1080p to the display

all it says on the screen is HDMI+A

what is optimal....

Thanks

Just go into the system settings on your 360 and set the resolution to 1080p. If you see he confirmation box after that, then you are outputting 1080p. All games, movies, etc will now be scaled to 1080p.

That setting is there for displays that don't report their supported resolutions properly. It just lets you force resolutions that the display may in actuality support, but that it doesn't report to the Xbox as supported.
