Displayable colors?

I want to get the industrial 50 inch panasonic 50PHD7UY instead of the 50PX25U/P because I do not need the speakers or the tuner. However the industrial tv only has 3.1 million displayable colors while the consumer version has over 1 billion. That is a BIG difference. What does this mean?

It means that the memories that record what color is supposed to be displayed at a particular spot on the screen have a few more bits. The software in the TV that converts the input signal can take advantage of this to make color gradients smoother.

As a practical matter, it is mostly a marketing game.
