Depends on how far away you're sitting. Do you have a center channel or is this for 2-ch music?
General rule of thumb is for the distance between the speakers to equal each of their distances to the listening position. In other words, forming an equilateral triangle between the speakers and you.
They should be placed in the spot where they sound the best. There is no correct distance apart from each other. However if your speakers have poor sound dispersion or sound-stage, then you will probably want them closer to each other than a wide spread. Again this still all falls under the first statement I made. Wherever they sound the best.
I do have a center channel speaker and I sit 9 feet from my screen. My speakers are original Energy Take 5's which are currently 5 feet apart from each other. They are not toe'd in.
